Steve Gooding, from the RAC Foundation, said: “We should all choose the right vehicle for the right trip to cut the size of our carbon footprint.”

His comments come as research confirms most SUVs are bought by urban drivers.

But motoring organisations said the analysis was too simplistic.

While Mr Gooding supported the principle of making appropriate choices of vehicles, he told the BBC it was wrong to protest against medium sized cars that look like SUVs but don't clog the streets and are economical to run.

Small SUVs are among the most popular cars on sale, because they usually offer the high-set driving position, practicality, safety and looks of more traditional off-roaders, but without the high price, running costs or emissions.”

外媒几乎都为麦道夫冠上“有史以来最大规模庞氏骗局的主谋”或“旁氏骗子”(Ponzi schemer)的名号。美国《时代》周刊甚至说,麦道夫正是“几代美国人了解‘庞氏骗局’这种精巧把戏的原因”。
 
“庞氏骗局”到底是怎样的“精巧把戏”?据美国知名金融教育网站Investopedia介绍,“庞氏骗局”是“向投资者许诺高收益、几乎无风险的投资诈骗”,本质上就是“用新钱还旧账”。
 
事实上,这种“拆东墙补西墙”的骗术可以追溯到19世纪中晚期,但真正暴得大名却是在上世纪20年代前后。当时在美国,一个名叫查尔斯·蓬齐(Charles Ponzi)的意大利移民把兜售邮政票据(postage coupons)的合法生意改造成内容复杂的投资诈骗项目。由于蓬齐的“投资计划”在美国内外以及事发前后均收割了大量媒体报道,从此也就成为同类骗局的代表。“庞氏”即Ponzi的另一音译。

不过,英语中的April weather可跟春日的美好并无多大关系,因为在包括英国在内的一些国家,四月是天气最多变(changeable)的月份之一,晴、雨、大风(gale)和低温天气经常混合上演,有时甚至会出现热浪(heatwave)和降雪等极端情况。德语中也有类似俗语:“April, April, der macht was er will”(April, April, it does whatever it wants),意思是“四月四月,随心所欲”。这与中国的老话“六月的天,娃娃的脸,说变就变”异曲同工。因此,如果人们评价某个人像April weather,那此人可不是“人间四月天”般的存在,而是喜怒无常(capricious)。
 
阵雨(shower)在四月的英国尤为常见,很多词典把April shower作为一个单独的词条(entry),亦有歌曲和电影以它为名。这种天气主要与地球高空对天气变化有重大影响的急流(jet stream)有关。初春,急流开始北移,低气压(depression)从大西洋上带来强风和降雨。
 
四月的阵雨也不全是坏事。英谚有云:“四月雨绵绵,五月百花妍。”(April showers bring May flowers.)四月的雨固然恼人,但它可以浇灌出五月陌上花开的美景,因而这个谚语有“苦尽甘来”“柳暗花明”“不经历风雨怎么见彩虹”之意。
