而中国龙起源于神话（folklore），是灵性的神异生物(deified animal)，龙是多种动物的综合体，拥有多种动物的特长，有蛇的身体、鱼的鳞片、鹿的角。

英语中 Dragon 这一词起源于希腊语当中 DRAKON（蟒蛇）一词，而与古希腊语同属印欧语系的拉丁文中也有接近的 Draco（巨蛇）一词。
不同于东方神龙们一开始便成为图腾、神灵的崇高地位，西方的 Dragon 似乎早早便成为了“恶”、“凶猛”的化身。在西方文化中，人们对龙的印象最早来自《圣经》，其中描述了一条大红龙，以邪恶形象示人，是魔鬼撒旦的化身。在《贝奥武夫》中，主人公贝奥武夫与会喷火的龙形怪兽搏斗，延续了基督教中龙的魔性、罪恶象征。因此，龙在西方神话故事中是被英雄屠杀的对象。

早在清末期，在美华人就将“中国龙”译作loong，以和西方的dragon区别开来。
