Explore a rainforest paradise

With sunshine and beaches, Hainan Island is a top choice (选择) for travelers. But Hainan is also a paradise (天堂) for animals and plants. Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is in the south-central part of the island. It has the best-kept tropical (热带的) rainforests in China. President Xi Jinping visited it in April. At 4,269 square kilometers, the park covers one-seventh of the island. More than 95 percent of the park is virgin forest If you go there, what can you enjoy?

Animals
The park is home to 540 kinds of terrestrial vertebrates Among them are Hainan gibbons (长臂猿), the world’s most endangered primate species (濒危灵长类物种). Hainan gibbons look like monkeys, but they have no tails. They live all of their lives in trees. They eat fruits and leaves from more than 130 kinds of plants, mostly in treetops 15 meters above the ground. If the rainforest is destroyed (破坏) just a little bit, they can go hungry. In the 1980s, there were fewer than 10 gibbons in the park. Now there are 36. It’s all thanks to the hard work of some people. They protected the gibbons’ homes and planted around 300,000 trees to give them more food, China Daily reported.

Plants
The park is a “live (活的) museum” of plants. More than 3,600 kinds of wild vascular plants (维管植物) grow there. It is also home to 133 kinds of national key protected plants.Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is an example. It has big, feather-like (像羽毛一样的) leaves. It grows slowly, but can live up to 200 years. This ancient species probably (可能) was around when dinosaurs lived on Earth. If one of these plants grows along the Yangtze River or in North China, it probably won’t grow flowers or fruit. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis over 10 years old blossom (开花) and bear fruit almost every year, thanks to the warm and wet weather.

Culture
The Li and Miao ethnic (民族的) groups have lived in the park for generations, mainly in the central Wuzhishan area. From their houses to their clothes, you can taste their culture.  Miao and Li people live in houses that look like upside-down boats. To keep away animals like snakes and ants, they build them on stilts (支柱). The houses sit above the ground. Since the rainforest is rich in trees, Li people make clothes from bark (树皮). Their history of tree bark clothing dates back to about 10,000 years ago, according to the park’s website. Some people still use bark clothing. Li people are also good at making cotton cloth and brocades (锦缎), as well as dyeing (染色).
