Know your food
People in China are becoming more allergic
Does your mouth itch (发痒) after eating mango? Be careful! You might be allergic (过敏的) to mangoes.
A new study showed that food allergies affected (影响) 8 percent of Chinese people from 2009 to 2018. The number was 5 percent from 1999 to 2008. Food allergies are increasing among Chinese people!
What it is and why it increases
Allergies are an overreaction (过度反应) of our body’s immune system (免疫系统). The body mistakes the food for something harmful (有害的) and starts fighting. For some people, an allergic reaction may not be too serious, such as itching or swelling (肿大) of the mouth. It could go away soon. But some people could have serious reactions like finding it hard to breathe or even passing out. These are life-threatening reactions and people need to see a doctor as soon as possible.
Scientists don’t know why food allergies are increasing all over the world. But one leading theory is that our immune system needs to “meet” germs (细菌). Then they can learn to tell between bad germs and good foods. However, the world we live in is becoming increasingly cleaner. So the immune system can’t learn it well.
What we can do to avoid it
You are more likely to be allergic to certain foods if some members of your family are. And if you’re already allergic to one food, it may be more likely that you’ll be allergic to another, according to US hospital Mayo Clinic.
There’s still no way to cure (治疗) food allergies today. The best way to deal with it is to avoid the allergens (过敏原). You can have an allergy test to learn whether your body is allergic to something. You should also read food packages (包装) carefully to protect yourself from eating the allergens.
The most common food allergens
Chinese scientists wrote in a new study that Chinese people are more likely to be allergic to seafood, and less likely to be allergic to peanuts compared to people in the United States and Europe. Let’s take a look at the 7 most common food allergens in China. The data is based on a study of nearly 21,000 people aged 6 to 10 and 18 to 70 in Jiangxi province.
