Violet Crawley: They wrote to me.
Isobel Crawley: Who did? I’m the hospital Almoner. Nobody’s written to me.
Violet Crawley: Ever since you took that position, you talk as if you run the place.
Isobel Crawley: I do run the place! Or, at least, I know every detail of how it’s run. And I ought to be told about any proposed changes.
Violet Crawley: If you must know, it was a friend, on the board in York, who whispered it to me. They’ll write to all of us soon.
Isobel Crawley: So, you want to protect your power at the expense of the patients, I want to protect the patients at the expense of my power.
Violet Crawley: And may the best man win.

Mrs. Hughes: ‘Decorate the servants’ hall’? I’m not sure how enticing that sounds.
Charles Carson: It was meant kindly.
Mrs. Hughes: I daresay.
Charles Carson: What would you like us to do?
Mrs. Hughes: If I’m honest, I’d like to get away for the day. Find somewhere local, where we can throw our own party instead of a gathering by courtesy of the Crawley family.
Charles Carson: You do mean to invite them?
Mrs. Hughes: Of course I do. Why, did you think you would have to get married without Lady Mary to witness it?
Charles Carson: She’s an important figure in my life, Mrs Hughes. I won’t apologize.
Mrs. Hughes: Nor do you have to. I just don’t want to be a servant on my wedding day. Is that so wrong?
Charles Carson: What should I tell His Lordship?
Mrs. Hughes: Tell him thank you, but no.

Cora Crawley: May I come in?
Mrs. Hughes: Please.
Cora Crawley: Mrs Hughes, I won’t beat about the bush. I behaved badly earlier. I hope you’ll accept my apology.
Mrs. Hughes: It must have been strange to find us all there, My Lady.
Cora Crawley: Nevertheless, I have no excuse to behave as I did. Not to someone who deserves our loyalty as you do. Please forgive me.
Mrs. Hughes: Of course.
Cora Crawley: I can only say I was angry about something quite different. I allowed it to cloud my judgement.
Mrs. Hughes: We’ve all done that, My Lady.
Cora Crawley: Finally, I’d like you to have this coat.
Mrs. Hughes: I···I’m not sure it was a good idea.
Cora Crawley: Please. Or I’ll feel I’ve spoiled the day which is the very last thing I’d want to do. Furthermore, I want you to keep it.
Mrs. Hughes: Well, I···
Cora Crawley: I’ve asked Baxter to fix it for you tonight, she’s happy to do that.
Mrs. Hughes: Very well, My Lady. I’m very grateful. I’m not sure when I’ll wear it again. But you never know.

精彩对话
Rosamund: You don’t have to tell me your mother’s in the right.
Edith Crawley: We can’t have a public quarrel or they’ll both be asked to resign from the board and even I don’t want that.
Rosamund: Which means I’m not to make Granny any angrier than she is already.
Edith Crawley: So how are you? What’s the news?
Rosamund: I do have some as a matter of fact. Have you heard of a place called Hillcroft? It’s in Turperton.
Edith Crawley: What sort of place?
Rosamund: A college for women from modest backgrounds but clever women with potential. I’m a trustee.
Edith Crawley: How interesting.
Rosamund: I knew you’d think so. So I’m going to suggest you as a trustee, too. Oddly enough, our treasurer lives up here. It’s one of the reasons I’ve come, so I can meet him while I’m at Downton. We’ll ask him over.
Edith Crawley: What’s his name?
Rosamund: John Harding. I like the sound of him. Self-made, clever, successful. And nearer your age than mine.

Mary Crawley: If we put the gate here, you’d be on a lane that links with the main road. You’d get power and plumbing from the supply at King’s Barrow.
Mary Crawley: Why don’t we put the repair shed there?
Tom: King’s Barrow is a working farm. There isn’t a spare farmyard half as accessible as here.
Mary Crawley: We ought to look at the costs. It’s good of you to come with me today.
Tom: Glad to, but he won’t want me there.
Mary Crawley: Nonsense. You have far more in common with him than I do.
Tom: Is it serious?
Mary Crawley: He’s attractive and nice, and it’s good to remember I’m a youngish woman again. But that’s all
Tom: Youngish?
Mary Crawley: I don’t mean to sound snobbish, but I won’t marry down.
Tom: Was Mr Matthew Crawley so very special in that way?
Mary Crawley: Matthew was the heir to the earldom and estate. I don’t want to be grander than my husband. Or richer.
Tom: It may surprise you, but I agree it’s important to be balanced that one should not be far stronger than the other. I just don’t think it has much to do with money or position.
Mary Crawley: Is that how you felt about Sybil?
Tom: To all of you, she had everything and I had nothing. She was the great lady, and I the man who drove the cars, but that wasn’t true for us. We were evenly matched, Sybil and I. She was strong in her beliefs, so was I. We were a marriage of equals. We were very happy.
Mary Crawley: I think we see that now. The family, I mean. Not at first, you’re right. But now.

Violet Crawley: My son’s wife, whom I have treated like a daughter.
Robert Crawley: Too like.
Violet Crawley: That she should connive at my humiliation, should revel as I am cast into the dust.
Robert Crawley: Steady the buffs. Cora doesn’t control this any more than you. You’ve had different opinions, but neither of you made it happen.
Violet Crawley: If only Mr Chamberlain had spoken···
Robert Crawley: He was never going to say a word. The truth is, Mama, officialdom doesn’t care what we think any more. Our influence is finished.
Violet Crawley: You can say that! You, whose very life has been saved.
Robert Crawley: You know dealing with emergencies won’t be affected. Do be logical.
Violet Crawley: I am sick and tired of logic! If I could choose between principles and logic, I’d take principle every time!

Violet Crawley: Do you enjoy wedding?
Isobel Crawley: Yes. But I’m not going to that one. I’d feel like the wicked fairy at the christening of Sleeping Beauty.
Violet Crawley: Why would Larry Grey want you to be there? I mean, you of all people.
Isobel Crawley: I’m sure he doesn’t. Dickie must’ve persuaded them to ask me.
Violet Crawley: I doubt that. He wouldn’t want to subject you to more insults.
Isobel Crawley: Well, who then?
Violet Crawley: I’d say this is the work of Miss Cruikshank. She’s the one always making a show of friendship. Why don’t I pay a call on her? See if I can winkle out the truth.
Isobel Crawley: I’m sorry I showed it to you now.
Violet Crawley: Oh, don’t be, don’t be.
···
Violet Crawley: Precisely. But don’t fear. I’ll call on Miss Cruikshank before I leave.
Isobel Crawley: I suspect she’s quite a tough nut.

Mary Crawley: If that’s what you feel, then why are you here?
Edith Crawley: Because, in the end, you’re my sister and one day, only we will remember Sybil··· Or Mama or Papa or Matthew or Michael or Granny or Carson or any of the others who have peopled our youth··· Until, at last, our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.

Edith Crawley: Is this all a set-up? Somebody tipped you off I was in London. Was it Papa?
Bertie Pelham: It was Mary.
Edith Crawley: Mary? How? What did she do?
Bertie Pelham: She booked the table and got your aunt to play along. They thought you might not come if it were me.
Edith Crawley: They were right there.
Bertie Pelham: Will you stay now? Please.
Edith Crawley: Bertie, I don’t know what I’m doing here. You broke my heart. I’m not blaming you, exactly. I know why you felt you had to···
Bertie Pelham: I want you back.
Edith Crawley: Nothing’s changed.
Bertie Pelham: I’ve changed.
Edith Crawley: Well, if you have, you haven’t said a word to me about it. I don’t believe you’d have spoken now if Mary hadn’t telephoned.
Bertie Pelham: I would have, I promise.
Edith Crawley: But what’s the difference? I still have Marigold. You have your mother.
Bertie Pelham: I’ve never told her we’d split up.
Edith Crawley: Well, we have.
Bertie Pelham: Would you believe me if I said I couldn’t live without you?
Edith Crawley: You’ve done a pretty good job of living without me lately.
Bertie Pelham: I’ve done a very bad job.
Edith Crawley: I don’t understand what you want of me. What are you asking?
Bertie Pelham: I want you to marry me.
Edith Crawley: Just like that?
Bertie Pelham: Whenever you choose, but···that’s what I want.
Edith Crawley: If I agreed, which is a big if, would you tell your mother the truth about Marigold?
Bertie Pelham: Let me put it this way, if we tell her, we’ll have to break with her. I’d prefer not to do that.
Edith Crawley: Even without your mother, there are people out there who know the truth. There could be gossip. Are you ready for it?
Bertie Pelham: Well, I hope to avoid it, but I’m ready if we can’t. The only thing I’m not ready for is a life without you.
