The Alligator's Secret
Alli, the alligator, is on his way to school. He goes through the swampy jungle.
On the way he sees a bush covered in bright, purple berries.
“Yummy,” says Alli. He opens his big mouth wide and jumps right into the bush to eat the berries. His munching makes a lot of noise. Suddenly, he hears a familiar voice behind him.
“Good morning, Alli,” says his friend, Sally.
“Hello, Sally,” says Alli, climbing out of the bush to greet his friend.
“Wowwww!” exclaims Sally, when she sees Alli's face, “you’ve gone all purple.”
Alli dashes over to a nearby swamp and looks at his reflection in the water.
“Oh no!” he says in horror, “what shall I do?”
But Sally is too busy laughing to be any help at all.
Even the frogs and fish are laughing. Alli rinses his mouth with swamp water.
Gargle, gargle, google.
Then he shakes his head from side to side and spits the water out. Splush, splash, splosh.
When Alli finishes washing, his face is clean again, but he still isn't happy. His teeth are stained a deep, purple color.
“Oh, no,” wails Alli. “What can I do? I can't go to school like this. Everyone will laugh at me.”
Sally decides to help her friend.
“Why don't you pretend that you have flu and have to wear a mask to stop the germs spreading?” She suggests. She wrapped some leaves around at his mouth to make a mask. Now Alli can't open his mouth. So, his secret is safe.
The two friends hurry to join the other alligators on their way to school.
At school, Sally gives Alli a piece of paper. It says, “Have flu. Can't talk.”
“Oh, poor Alli.” say his teacher and classmates.
Every morning school starts with the school song. Alli loves singing and he wishes he could join in, but he can't sing today.
In the middle of the song. A dandelion seed drifts through the air and lands right on the end of Alli’s nose.
“Baa—chikos--” he thinks. “ah-ah-ah-choo--” sneezes Alli.
The mask bursts apart as Alli sneezes. And his mouth opens wide. His secret is out in the open for all to see. Alli’s classmates take one look at his purple teeth, and they start to laugh.
“Ahhhhhh.”
But Alli’s teacher doesn't laugh. She is cross with Alli because he lied to her and pretended to be ill. She sends Alli to the dentist straight away to have his teeth cleaned.
Alli’s teacher gives him a map to help him find the dentist surgery. It's not far away.
The dentist examines Allice teeth.
“No problem.” He says cheerfully. “Open wide.” The dentist cleans and polishes Alli’s teeth one by one.
Alli is back at school just in time for his favorite music lesson. Can you see which one of the singing alligators is Alli?
Alli sings with his mouth open. He is happy to be able to sing again. But more than anything, he is relieved that his secret isn't a secret any longer.
