不管懂不懂英文，每个人大概都听过或说过“女士优先”这句话吧。英文中还有一句类似的话很少有人说：Age before beauty. 老人优先。
这句话很微妙，今天的小文你读得慢点，仔细琢磨一下。
先来讲一个小故事，发生在两个美国女人之间。
Clare Boothe Luce, 1903年生，美国驻意大利大使（1953-1956），作家，以下简称Clare。
Dorothy Parker，1893年生，美国诗人、作家、文艺批评家，以下简称Dorothy.
Clare比Dorothy年轻十岁，记住这一点即可。
据说有一次，这两个女人在一个社交场合遇见了，两人同时走到一个门口时，Clare给走在她后面的Dorothy拉门让她先行，嘴上说了一句“Age before beauty”. 老人优先。
你能想象那个场面的尴尬和Dorothy当时的窝火吗？我猜她心里肯定在暗骂“WTF?!你说老娘比你老？”
但不愧是文学批评家和讽刺作家，Dorothy微微一笑，走了过去，对Clare说了句“Pearls before swine.”
这句话经典、聪明到无法翻译——取自英文成语 Cast pearls before swine，字面意思是撒一把珍珠在猪面前，纯属浪费，一般对应汉语成语“对牛弹琴”。
你再把玩一下上面两人简短的语言交锋：
年轻的女人说Age before beauty. 言外之意是“你先走，老太婆。“
年长的女人说Pearls before swine. 言外之意是“好啊，猪头跟在珍珠后面。”
女人，不能惹啊。文艺中青年女人，都不能惹。
Age before beauty. 是一句开玩笑的话，生人之间最好别随便说，因为玩笑尺度不好把握。
意思是：Olderpeople should be given precedence over the younger and, by implication, morebeautiful. This is normally used jocularly, often by the older person in order toflatter the younger.
如果年轻人请老年人先行，说age before beauty，有自诩漂亮暗指对方年老之嫌。
所以这句话最好由老年人说，显得老年人自谦，同时恭维年轻人青春靓丽。
Wiktionary上对这个词条的解释非常好：
Now most often used humorously or lightheartedly, and usually said by a younger person to an olderfriend or relative out of mock pity (for being so much older and unattractive –even if such is not the case).
