Police discovered the bodies of 39 members of Heaven's Gate, an American religious group that believed in unidentified flying objects; they had committed suicide in the belief that a spaceship was arriving to take them to a better place.
Cults abound in human history. Most are religious, many are political, and some are commercial.
Whatever the purposes, all cults have things in common, pretend to be religion, self claim to be always correct, and profess to be the only Truth on earth.

In 1966 he moved from the US to Taiwan, and had a house built in Yangmingshan, Taipei, where he spent his final ten years. He was buried in a simply designed tomb in the backyard.
