Thousands of fanatic students in Berlin carried out a series of book burnings of works the Nazi Party labeled as “un-German spirit".
Over 40,000 people gathered to hear an instigating speech by Joseph Goebbels.

He was slated to win the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature, but died before he could be awarded the prize.
