National Straw Hat Day
(in the U.S.)
Straw hats meant a lot to the earlier generations, and May 15 symbolized the actual start of the summer days.
I got my first straw hat from my grandpa when I was about four years old.
Grandpa hand-made it for me and taught me how to make one, from sorting out usable material from a pile of wheat straws to braiding them together and connecting the strands to the frame.
When I made my first straw hat all by myself, grandpa was delighted, smoking his pipe in the summer moonlight.
I lost the two hats long ago, and Grandpa died when I was 9.
