Today is
Ascension Day
in many European countries
The day, on the Thursday 40 or 39 days after Easter, is to commemorate Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven.
It is a public holiday in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, and other Catholic or Anglican Christian countries, but not in Protestant countries (such as the U.S., etc.)
Yesterday I was on a call with my German and Austrian colleagues. They tried to explain the day to me, but their English was not good enough.
In the end, they said, ok, tomorrow is the final end of the Easter Season, period.
And you know what, they are right. Today is the final, official, last day and closing of the Easter Season.
In case you wonder about it, here is the storyline as per the New Testament:
After Jesus Christ's crucifixion on Good Friday, he rose from the dead after three days. That day was Easter Sunday.
In the following 40 days, Jesus Christ stayed with his disciples, giving them lessons, training, and lectures on how to carry out his teachings.
At the end of the 40th day, Jesus Christ went to Mount Olivet and ascended to heaven to sit on the right-hand side of God.
