Japan's Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration to the Japanese people over the radio.
The English call today V-J Day (Victory
over Japan Day), but for the U.S., V-J Day is Sep 2.
It was the day when
Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, bringing the war to an
end.
The name, V-J Day, had been selected by the Allies after
they named V-E Day for the victory in Europe.

Indian Independence Day
On Aug 15, 1947, the Indian PM, Jawaharlal Nehru(尼赫鲁), lifted
the Indian flag in Delhi, announcing India’s independence from the U.K.

the Italian writer and 1926 Nobel Prize for Literature laureate, died at age
64.
The Nobel Prize in Literature 1926 was awarded to Grazia Deledda "for her idealistically inspired writings which with plastic clarity picture the life on her native island and with depth and sympathy deal with human problems in general."
