The news brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
The California Gold Rush began.

The “Rush” peaked in 1852 and was over by the end of the decade.In 1851, after gold was found in Melbourne, more people left California for Australia. 
That’s how San Francisco got its name in Chinese - 旧金山(Lit. Old Gold Mountain).
Today, San Francisco has three names in Chinese translation (transliteration):
旧金山(大陆、台湾根据历史的音译)三藩市(香港按照广东话发音的音译)圣佛朗西斯科(海外华语圈根据英文读音的音译)
