还记得吗，世界杯刚开始的时候有条这样的热搜：25岁小伙辞去原有的稳定的公职工作去看世界杯。C姐自己是很佩服这种尽情生活、享受人生的勇气和随性。一生之中有多少次满足自我、及时行乐的机会呢，能洒脱而无畏的利用人生，不是很让人羡慕吗。
这件事倒是让C姐想起了一句拉丁语“carpe diem”. 不是因为我会说拉丁语，而是carpe diem在英语国家中的使用频率非常之高。
carpe diem

carpe diem 是罗马诗人Horace的名言，出自《颂歌》（公元前23年出版），全句是：carpe diem quam minimum credula postero.
直译成英文其实应该是：pluck the day, trusting as little as possible in the next one. 抓紧时间，不要过于相信明天。
在16世纪和17世纪的英国文学中，carpe diem所代表的内涵和状态是诗人们格外关注的话题。英国诗人Robert Herrick在《To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time》（出自《赫斯佩里得斯》，1648年出版）这首诗的第一节中，就表达了一种强烈的“carpe diem”意识。
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.
到了19世纪初，carpe diem在英语中逐渐在大众中也流行起来并一直被使用，不过，其意义被更广泛的翻译成了saize the day。
比如电影《死亡诗社》中，基廷老师带着威尔顿学校的学生们观看校友的黑白照片时，说出了这句电影史上的金句之一：Carpe diem, seize the day, boys, make your lives extraordinary. 把握今朝，抓住现在，年轻人，去创造不同凡响的人生。
活在当下，尽可能多地享受乐趣吧，因为你只活一次。既然你不会永远年轻，明天也不一定会到来，那么现在就开始及时享乐吧。
Live for the moment and have as much fun as you can now, because you only live once. Since you won’t be young forever, and tomorrow is promised to no one, get it now.
而除了“把握今天，抓住现在”，carpe diem也有“抓住机遇，因为它可能不会再次出现”这种解释。
那除了carpe diem，还可以如何表示“把握今天，及时行乐”呢？

make the most of的意思是“充分利用”，所以make the most of today自然是“充分享受今天”。

live for the moment是指“活在当下”，这个短语更突出对未来的不关心，而专注于当下所能拥有的快乐。

I've always lived for the moment, preferring to spend what I earn on vacations and nice things right then and there.
我这个人只活在当下，更喜欢立刻就把挣来的钱就花在度假和各种好东西上。
stop and smell the roses

stop and smell the roses的本意是是指停下来，闻闻玫瑰的芬芳；引申为“花时间去享受生活中更美好或更愉快的事物”，尤其使用于当一个人过度劳累或压力过大时。

You can't keep working these 80 hour workweeks, John! You have to stop and smell the roses, or else what is all that work even for?
你不能每周工作80个小时，约翰！你必须停下来享受生活，否则工作到底是为了什么?
没有人能知道明天会发生什么，我们能做的也许只是把握今天，及时行乐。过去无法改变，无需庸人自扰，未来无从可知，不必杞人忧天，我们需要过好的只有今天，one day at a time。
