I'm
planning a trip to the USA in 2024 or 2025 with another family,
including kids. We want to explore some amazing places that truly
represent the essence of the country. But, you know, being from a
different country, all we see on TV is the crime and safety concerns in
some areas—robberies, drug use, and all that. We definitely want to
avoid that. Any suggestions for safe and beautiful places to experience
the real charm of the USA?

Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. All of it.
Highlights
include Lake Superior's North Shore, Bayfield peninsula and Apostle
Islands, Wisconsin's Door County, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Mackinac
Island and Sleeping Bear Dunes. Not to mention the many great charming
lake towns along the shores.
Fly
into Chicago, drive along Lake Michigan's eastern shore to Sleeping
Bear. Spend at least a day at the dunes. Then head to the Mighty Mac
(along M-22 for a longer scenic drive), visiting towns like Traverse
City, Petoskey and Charlevoix along the way. Stay in St. Ignace and
spend a day on Mackinac Island. Explore the Upper Peninsula as much as
you want. Have a pasty or two.
Head
down to Wisconsin and loop around the bay to Door County, visiting its
charming towns. Attend a Fish Boil. Backtrack a bit, head over to
Bayfield and spend some time exploring the Apostle Islands.
Drive
along the South Shore of Lake Superior to Duluth, Minnesota, which has
shopping, great outdoor activities and a growing food/beverage scene.
Then drive along the North Shore all the way up to the Canadian border.
Be sure to visit the many fantastic Minnesota State Parks along the way
(outstanding hiking), as well as the town of Grand Marais and the Grand
Portage National Monument. If you're adventurous you could hike the
Grand Portage itself. The Superior Hiking Trail all along the North
Shore has incredible hikes. There's also the Gitchi-Gami state trail if
you're into biking.
If you're really
adventurous you could do a camping side trip in the BWCAW to see some
of the most pristine land in the Lower 48 -- only foot traffic and
canoes allowed. There are outfitters that can provide you with
everything you need. Driving the Gunflint Trail can give you a sense of
the terrain without going full 18th century European Fur Trader.
Finally
head south and visit Minnesota's Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St.
Paul, where you can fly out to most anywhere else in the country or
internationally.
This whole (part
of a) trip can take anywhere from a week to several weeks, depending on
how much you want to see. There are resorts and hotels all along the
route.
