Apples and oranges
其实“orange”这个词直到中世纪晚期才进入英语，它最早源自梵文，经过阿拉伯语和其他几种语言转变，最终才变成英语。而在这之前，其实很多水果，包括橘子都被叫做“apple”，后来orange这个词出现，橘子和苹果的英文才被区分开。所以人们也用apples and oranges这个词来表达 two things are completely different and it is not sensible to compare them，也就是两个完全不相干的事物，比较它们是不恰当的。
You can't compare the new scores to the previous years. It's apples and oranges.
