我们先来认识这个表达
give someone an inch and they'll take a mile
saying
said about someone who has been given a small amount of power or freedom to
do something, and then has tried to get a lot more
指某人被给予少量权力或自由去做某事，然后就试图获得更多的行为；得寸进尺
这个表达使用了inch和mile形成对比，一英寸是2.54cm，一英里大概是16万cm。这两个之间的差距是相当大的。用这样一种夸张的说法也是为了凸显占便宜这个人是有多过分。别人想给你一点点，你却想要的巨多。
这样意思的谚语也出现在很多国家，只不过其中的inch和mile也换了个词。

在实际使用时，人们经常会省略后半句只说give an inch。
需要我们知道的是，这个表达也不光是在表达某人的气愤。就比如如果某人让你give an
inch，那么ta的意思其实是希望你能够体谅他们的要求，妥协一点去做某事。
I know you want Italian for dinner, but can't you give an inch so that we can
find a place that works for both for us?
我知道你晚餐想吃意大利菜，但你能不能让步一点?这样我们就能找到一个双方都能吃的地方。
当使用它的否定形式not give an inch时，就表示“不以任何方式移动或改变，寸步不让”。
They are not willing to give an inch to anyone.
他们不想对任何人让步。
