Barty Crouch Jr. fooled a lot of people in Goblet of Fire when he disguised himself as the former Auror Mad-Eye Moody, and also teased Draco Malfoy by turning him into a ferret.

At first, the audience thought Moody was doing this because Malfoy was going to curse Harry behind his back. However, when we look back at the scene and realize that Barty Crouch Jr. actually did it, his attack on Malfoy becomes more thought-provoking. Perhaps the real motive is hidden under the guise of good intentions.

In the Goblet of Fire book when discussing Durmstrang's Headmaster and former Death Eater Igor Karkaroff, “Moody” tells Harry “If there's one thing I hate more than any other, it's a Death Eater who walked free.”

Later on, after Harry Potter defeats Voldemort in the graveyard, Crouch asks Harry if Voldemort punished the Death Eaters who escaped Azkaban. At Harry’s confusion, Crouch repeats the line, specifying that he hates any Death Eater who denied Voldemort and did not remain loyal after Voldemort disappeared.

His hatred of this kind of Death Eater may stem from the fact that he was locked up in Azkaban for years while others, like Lucius, were freed. Lucius Malfoy was one of the many Death Eaters who escaped after the end of the First Wizarding War, and as such he was a prime example of the kind of person Barty Crouch Jr. hated most.

After the end of the First Wizarding War and Lord Voldemort's disappearance, Lucius, as he was known, was called to account for his crimes. In order to save his social standing and reputation, Lucius ensnagged many Ministry workers on his side through blackmail, bribery, and flattery before the trial.
