In the Harry Potter series, most of the stories take place at Hogwarts School. However, the wizarding world is full of magical creatures such as basilisks, centaurs and giant spiders, and thestrals are one of the most mysterious of them all.

In Hogwarts, Thestrals are used to pull the Hogwarts carriages that bring students to and from the train station every school year. Unsuspecting students might assume the carriages are horseless, moving through magical spells.

That's because thestrals are invisible to people who haven't seen death. Only those who witnessed someone's death can see them. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry witnesses Cedric's death. Holding himself responsible for the accident, he felt terrible grief.

Not everyone can understand what really feels like to watch someone die: when characters are feeling lost and blue, Thestrals are there to show them they are not alone.

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix delicately explores grief by introducing the Thestrals, but also Luna Lovegood. Harry and Luna's friendship is beautiful and one of the best in the franchise.

Thestrals are also an integral part of Hogwarts -- Rubeus Hagrid can see them, and he rides them easily.

In the Harry Potter books, Neville reveals that he witnessed his grandfather die thus he could see the Thestrals, but this information is not in the movies.
