Emperor Guangxu of China's Qing Dynasty issued an edict to establish Jingshi University Hall, or the Imperial University of Peking (京師大學堂).
Jingshi University Hall was the first national comprehensive university in China and the precursor of Peking University.
W.A.P. Martin, an American missionary, translator, and Emperor Guangxu's English teacher was appointed the president of the university in August.
