Today is
Poet’s Day
Whether you are a reader or writer of poetry, or neither, you can read or write a poem too, today.
*Below is a little poem I wrote this morning, leaning on the bed, milling around on my cellphone, soft-googling.
What’s poetry and who’s the poet?
Poetry is all about moments -
Moments that are fleeting and transient,
instant and infinite.
Poetry is all about you
and the fact that you are unique,
but you need not show off or flaunt.
Poetry reveals the real you,
whom you can be and what you cannot,
however unusual and special
Today is all about poets -
Poets that knock at your heart and soul;
But they often leave no name or trace,
they just knock and go.
Who is your favorite poet?
Dante, Keats, Burns, Walt Whitman?
Shakespeare, Shelley, Dickinson, Maya Angelou?
If you once fell in love with one of them,
the love blesses the whole of you.
Who cares to read a poem these days?
The great names have withered,
The mightier pens - rusty
The like minds aloof, at arm’s length.
Yet I still believe
Poetry saves and heals
Poets deserve a book and a day
and you
dream and pursue -
deserve every beautiful
Sunday morning.
