National Peiyang University (北洋大学堂), originally Imperial Tientsin University, was established in Tianjin in October 1895 by Sheng Xuanhuai(盛宣怀), the official of the Tianjin Customs, with the approval of the Guangxu Emperor
of Qing dynasty.
It was the first government-run university in modern
China where western science & technology was its main focus.

In 1917, Peiyang University merged into Peking University.
In 1951, it was renamed Tianjin University.

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2 October, the
birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement
and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. (General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of 15 June 2007)

She is perhaps best known for this haiku:
