National Peiyang University (北洋大学堂), originally Imperial Tientsin University, was established in Tianjin in October 1895 by Sheng Xuanhuai（盛宣怀）, the official of the Tianjin Customs, with the approval of the Guangxu Emperor
of Qing dynasty.
It was the first government-run university in modern
China where western science & technology was its main focus.
In 1917, Peiyang University merged into Peking University.
In 1951, it was renamed Tianjin University.

Chiyo-Ni（千代尼/千代女）, the Japanese Buddhist nun and one of Japan's greatest Haiku poets, died at age 72.
She is perhaps best known for this haiku:
morning glory!the well bucket-entangled,I ask for water
