Normally when we say cards or play cards, we mean we will use a deck of cards to play a game, one of those games is poker.

Poker is a special card game, because it's a gambling game. And when people were playing poker, they normally would have chips. You can play cards without chips.

a wild card
1
You describe someone or something as a wild card when they cause uncertainty because nobody knows how they will behave or what effects they will have.
He is too much of a wild card to be a successful candidate. Nobody wants to vote for someone wildly unpredictable.

fold (one's) cards
2

1. To withdraw one's hand in defeat in a game of cards, as by laying one's cards face down.
I tried to bluff my way with a pair of threes, but I eventually had to fold my cards.

2. By extension: to discontinue one's pursuit, endeavor or effort; to give up.
After nearly 25 years in this industry, I think I'm ready to fold my cards. It's just gotten too hard to make a profit anymore.

keep cards close to chest
3
keep (one's) cards close to (one's) chest 指的是:
To keep one's plans, intentions, or tactics secret from everyone else.
We're all curious about what the boss has been discussing in those meetings with the lawyers, but she's keeping her cards close to her chest.

a card up (one's) sleeve
4
a card up (one's) sleeve
They think they have an airtight case against me, but I've got a card or two up my sleeve.

showing a card trick to a dog
5
like showing a card trick to a dog
Good luck getting that doofus to understand the intricacies of the budget report. It's like showing a card trick to a dog.

one card short of a full deck
6
be one card short of a full deck
He says he's going to start a business selling bees as pets —— I think he may be one card short of a full deck.

keep (one's) cards close to (one's) chest
a card up (one's) sleeve
like showing a card trick to a dog
be one card short of a full deck
