Trick-or-treating has its origins in multiple cultures and parts in history. The well-known Halloween custom has had many contributing factors to its existence.
“不给糖就捣蛋”起源于多种文化和历史。这个连现在小朋友都知道的万圣节习俗有许多促成其存在的因素。
从2000年前凯尔特人的夏末节传统，到中世纪基督教的万灵节习俗，19世纪初英国诞生了现代“不给糖就捣蛋”传统的雏形，最终在美国各种文化交流融合，这项传统逐渐扎根、变形，最终流行起来。
Treat是各式各样的甜蜜糖果，那trick都有什么呢？比如TP houses扔卫生纸（TP = toilet paper），egging houses扔鸡蛋，用fake blood or fake body parts吓人...等等，恶作剧的形式各式各样，只要不是被恶作剧的那个，其实还是很有意思的。

To do, accomplish, or fulfil exactly what is needed or sought after.
做到、完成事情，达到理想的结果

Bag是口袋，袋子；trick是诀窍、手法。Bag of tricks 顾名思义就是指“各种诀窍，种种手法”。

Every possible way to do or achieve something, especially ways that are clever, cunning, or ethically questionable.
完成或实现某件事的一切可能的方式，尤其是指那些精明的、狡猾的或道德上有问题的方式。

A method of deception, or of addressing some issue, that is well known or has been used for a long time.
一种众所周知、或已使用很长时间的欺骗或解决问题的方法

之前的学习中，C姐介绍过 like showing a card trick to a dog （←点击查看）这个习惯用语，今天我们就再认识另一个trick + dog的短语：teach an old dog new tricks，教一只老狗新把戏。
这个短语的引申意思是“教给某人一些新的技能，以改变长期的习惯或方式，尤其是指教一个坚定地坚持自己的方式、一成不变的老年人”。

It's great that you want to teach your grandpa how to use a computer, but just be aware that it can be hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
你想教爷爷使用电脑是很好的，但要知道，这会非常困难。

never miss a trick 形容的是那些“随时利用每一个机会为自己谋取利益、好处的人”。
🌰举个例子

dirty trick

dirty trick 是一种为了某人的利益而采取的不道德或不诚实的行为。
🌰举个例子
I really wish you had been honest with me from the start about causing damage to my car. Blaming the neighbor was a real dirty trick.
我真希望你从一开始就对我坦白是你弄坏了我的车，责怪邻居真是一个卑鄙的伎俩。
confidence game/trick

confidence game/trick 里的confidence是“信任”而不是“自信”的意思，这种用法可追溯到19世纪中期。
看过英剧《Hustle》（《飞天大盗》）的小伙伴们一定熟悉这个词：con man，这里的con同样也是confidence，指先获得某人的信任然后欺骗他们的骗子，confidence game/trick 就是指这种骗人手法。
