我们有许多的日常迷惑行为，比如：转发微博/朋友圈锦鲤祝好运；不在室内打伞；不能把筷子竖插在饭碗里；左眼跳财右眼跳灾...
同样，西方也有自己的小迷惑，比如说我们之前提到的cross one's fingers（←点击回顾），手指交叉希望得到好运气；打破镜子会倒霉七年；两人如果无意间说出同一个单词或短语会引发厄运，所以谁抢先说出单词 “Jinx” 谁就会打破厄运；还有我们今天要学习的knock on wood。
Knock是敲，wood是木头， knock on wood这个习惯用语往往是用在表达某种愿望之后，意思是“但愿有这种好运”。当然，许多人会选择直接敲两下离自己最近的木制品，而不把knock on wood说出口。
🌰举个例子
One of my old friends was just diagnosed with cancer. I just pray nothing like that ever happens to my family, knock on wood.
我的一个老朋友刚被诊断患了癌症。但愿这种事情不会发生在我家人身上，天老爷保佑。
有的人说，knock on wood产生于中世纪，当时人们认为只要触摸到耶稣受难的十字架就会给自己带来好运；而另一种说法是，古代有人迷信地认为木头里有专门破坏别人好事的神灵，如果你说了knock on wood，神灵就听不见你说的话，也就无法破坏你的好事了。

那位教授可能是个政治学家，但是当谈到现实政治的时候，他显然茫然无知。
这个用语来自1595年一首很流行的诗歌"the Children Of The Wood"（“树林的孩子们”）。诗里写的是两个孤儿被遗弃在森林里的故事。后来 a babe in the woods 逐渐演变，指孤立无助或是没有经验的人。

🌰举个例子
These blood test results are a good sign, but you're not out of the woods just yet.
这些血检结果是个好兆头，但你还没有脱离危险。
be out of the woods还常出现在另一个习惯用语中——don't whistle until you are out of the woods。它的意思是指：
Don't consider or proclaim a problem solved until you are sure that it is completely, permanently resolved, as more issues might crop up before then.
不要在完全确定、永久地解决了问题之前，就提前认为或宣布问题已经解决，因为在那之后可能会出现更多的问题。

A: "I'm confident that the treatment will eliminate the cancer very quickly."

So many times I couldn’t see the forest for the tree
其中can't see the forest/wood for the trees的意思是指“关注小细节而忽略了大局，舍本逐末”。
Focus only on small details and fail to understand larger plans or principles.
由于被琐碎的细节所占据，无法理解或关注大局。也就是所谓的“一叶障目，不见泰山”。
🌰举个例子
The way he's obsessing over one doorknob when we're renovating the entire house makes me think that he can't see the forest for the trees.
我们翻修整个房子的时候，他被一个门把手占据了全部心思，让我觉得他就是本末倒置。

cut the deadwood out 除了指“修剪植物的枯死部分”，另一个意思是：
To eliminate or remove one who is ineffective and unproductive.
排除或解雇一个没有效率和生产力的人。
