大约在百年前，有很多有钱人花大价钱购买稀有品种的修狗来显示自己很有钱，一些阔太太们经常在接待客人的时候把狗狗抱在腿上，眩耀自己的阔气。当时耶鲁大学的学生就创造了put on the dog这一说法来嘲笑那些暴发户。put on the dog的意思就是“摆排场给别人看”。
🌰举个例子
Joe is sure putting on the dog since his rich aunt died and left him 10 million dollars.
自从乔的姑姑去世，留给他一千万美元遗产以后，他可真是摆阔气。
go to the dogs

而与put on the dog的意思相反的是：go to the dogs，指的是：变得很穷，彻底破落；或情况变得很糟糕、完蛋。
🌰举个例子
Pete got hooked on heroin and lost his job and his wife--I never saw a man go to the dogs so fast!
皮特染上毒瘾，失去了工作和妻子。我从来没有看到过任何人破落得这么快的！

let sleeping dogs lie 的字面是不要去惹正在睡觉的狗，因为睡着了的狗不会咬人。也就是说：要是采取什么行动会给自己或别人带来麻烦，那么最好还是保持现状，不要采取行动，即，“在采取行动前慎重考虑，不要轻易改变现状”。
🌰举个例子
If I were you, I would not tell Nellie you saw her husband having lunch with another woman. It might have been perfectly innocent, so I'd let sleeping dogs lie.
要是我是你的话，我就不会去告诉内利你看见她丈夫和另一个女人一起吃午饭的事。也许他们根本就没有什么事，所以你还是别惹麻烦。

Every dog has his day 的意思是：每个人总会有实现自己愿望的一天。

你以为 a dog's life 的意思是“一只狗狗的生活”？不，其实它形容的是一种“困难的、不愉快的、或无聊的”生活！

你们这些厚颜无耻、妄自尊大的傲慢的混蛋自以为前途光明，但我告诉你们，生活难着呢！
call off the/(one's) dogs

call off the/(one's) dogs 里的“dogs”指的是“走狗、手下”等的意思，所以这个习惯用语是“停止贬低或以其他方式攻击某人”。

I wonder if you'd consider calling off the dogs.
我想知道你是否愿意考虑让你的手下别再穷追猛打。
