今日一词——Trade-off
【释义】
牛津：a situation in which you balance two opposing situations or qualities 平衡；协调
柯林斯：A trade-off is a situation where you make a compromise between two things, or where you exchange all or part of one thing for another. 妥协; 交换
韦氏：a balancing of factors all of which are not attainable at the same time
【例句】
There is a trade-off between doing the job accurately and doing it quickly.
工作做得准确无误和迅速快捷之间有个平衡。
She said that she'd had to make a trade-off between her job and her family.
她说她必须平衡好工作和家庭。

trade可以表示买卖、交易、交换，off可以理解成从...落下，离开，去掉。这两个词结合在一起，用一个中文词语就能准确地揭露本质——取舍。
分开写就是动词短语，trade off.
If you trade off one thing against another, you exchange all or part of one thing for another, as part of a negotiation or compromise.
