Woman, 20, admitted to hospital with UTI - ended up having hands and feet amputated
A woman who was admitted to hospital with a urine infection ended up having her hands and feet amputated.
Brazilian Gabrielle Barbosa, 20, was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI) which was treated with antibiotics in December but ended up being far more serious than anticipated.
In March this year Barbosa, from Rio, began to experience problems with her kidneys which led to hospitalization and a dramatic quadruple amputation.
Barboso told Brazilian news outlet Globo that she felt a pain in her kidney while at work and was "rushed to hospital".
She was placed on a drip and treated for renal colic. Before long the infection had spread - but she was sent home due to an alleged lack of beds.
By the time she was admitted her condition had drastically worsened and she lost both her hands and feet as a result of the spiraling infection.
UTIs occur when bacteria enters the urinary tract. They are normally cured with a course of antibiotics, with symptoms usually easing shortly after medication is taken.
However, in more severe cases, the infection can spread. This occurs if the bacteria enters the kidneys, from where it can also enter the bloodstream.
In extreme cases this can lead to sepsis - a sometimes deadly infection.
"I went into hospital on March 31, but I was already very bad," Barbosa continued. "I was intubated and had two cardiac arrests.
"I was in an induced coma for six days and when I woke up I found that my hands and feet were bandaged. The doctors took a while to tell me they were going to amputate but I already knew."
Barbosa is now going through physical therapy and is adjusting to her new life, which she shares with more than 200,000 followers on Instagram.
