Pharmacist shares unusual symptom of diabetes that appears in your mouth
One unusual symptom of diabetes shows up in your mouth, according to a pharmacist.
Superintendent Pharmacist Hussain Abdeh says fruity-smelling breath can indicate high ketone levels, which requires urgent attention by a medical professional. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pointed out that these acids, known as ketones, occur when the body is breaking down fat for fuel.
If the body doesn't have enough insulin to break down sugars in the blood, then the cells are starved of energy. To compensate, the liver breaks down fat for fuel – and the by-product is ketones.
Abdeh said this reaction could "occur if you have both type 1 or type 2 diabetes". "You may have a very dry mouth at the same time and also experience an extreme thirst," he added. "You might find that you need to urinate more often than normal; this can also be a sign of high blood sugar levels."
For those who suffer from low blood sugars, mood swings might be expected, reports the Express. "If you are feeling irritable, aggressive, or confused for no known reason, these may be signs of low blood sugar," said Abdeh.
"Some people may also experience coordination problems or find it hard to make decisions. Some people with low blood sugar may also feel mild euphoria, which may feel like you are a bit drunk."
The pharmacist further explained: "Alternatively if you have high blood sugar levels, you may feel nervous or fatigued. The changes in blood sugar levels can have an impact on your mood, which normally goes away when your levels return to normal."
Anybody experiencing unexplained mood swings, or fruity-smelling breath, should book an appointment with their doctor. The NHS says there are 2 main types of diabetes:
type 1 diabetes – a lifelong condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
type 2 diabetes – where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin properly
Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, over 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.
