《自然学英语》一直主张必须从有限的学习范围，打好坚实的语言基础，通过完全“消化（digestion）“和”“内化“(internalization)来真正掌握。曾经有学生问老师：如何才算词汇基础扎实、厚重？只要牢牢记住这个单词的基本意思和词性算可以了吧？下面我们就以厚重”heavy“这个可能最早就会的单词“来诠释一下：
很多人知道heavy它主要有两个意思，一个是表示物体的沉重，譬如Heavy furniture沉重的家具，另一个是表示数量多，量大，譬如heavy rain: 倾盆大雨，可是heavy作为形容词也绝不辜负它的“厚重“， 来一起看看下面这些短语：
