Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1977, Mirzakhani showed an extraordinary talent in mathematics from a young age. She excelled in national and international mathematical Olympiads as a high school student, winning gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiads in 1994 and 1995, achieving a perfect score in the latter.
