Minor Heat, or Xiaoshu, is the 11th of the
24 traditional Chinese solar terms. It typically occurs between July 6th and
8th when the sun reaches a celestial longitude of 105 degrees. The arrival of
Minor Heat signifies the beginning of the hottest phase of summer, though the
peak heat has not yet arrived.
小暑是中国传统二十四节气中的第十一个节气,通常出现在每年的7月6日至7月8日之间,此时太阳黄经达到105度。小暑的到来,意味着暑热开始进入最盛的阶段,但尚未到最热。
After Minor Heat, temperatures continue to
rise, rainfall increases, and humidity grows. Most regions in China enter the
rainy season during this period, characterized by high temperatures and high
humidity. People start paying special attention to preventing heat-related
illnesses.
小暑以后,气温不断升高,降水增多,湿度增大,全国大部分地区进入了雨季,高温和高湿共同构成了这一时期的主要气候特点,人们开始特别注意防暑降温。
In northern regions, though there may be
occasional showers or thunderstorms, the weather generally remains hot and
sunny. In southern regions, this period marks the end of the plum rain season,
with flood control and prevention becoming crucial tasks.
北方地区虽然也会有阵雨或雷阵雨,但总体上仍以晴热天气为主;而南方则进入了梅雨季节的尾声,防汛抗洪是这一时期的重要任务。
For farmers, Minor Heat is a busy season.
Crops like rice and corn are in critical stages of rapid growth, requiring more
water and nutrients. Irrigation, fertilization, and pest control are vital
during this period. Additionally, early-ripening crops such as early rice and
wheat are ready for harvest.
对于农民来说,小暑是一个忙碌的季节。水稻、玉米等农作物都处于关键的快速成长期,需要更多的水分和养分,因此灌溉、施肥和病虫害防治成为了这一时期的关键工作。此外,早稻、小麦等早熟作物则进入了收获时节。
During Minor Heat, foods that help cool the
body, such as mung bean soup, lotus leaf porridge, and lotus root, become
common on dining tables. In some southern regions, like Jiangsu and Zhejiang, people
attach great importance to eating eels during Minor Heat, with a saying that
eating yellow eel during Minor Heat is as nourishing as ginseng. In northern
regions, people may focus more on consuming wheat-based foods like dumplings
and noodles.
小暑时节,绿豆汤、荷叶粥、藕等清热解暑的食物成为家家户户餐桌上的常客。同时,在南方一些地区,如江浙一带,人们特别重视在小暑吃黄鳝,有“小暑黄鳝赛人参”的说法。在北方部分地区,可能更注重吃面食,比如饺子、面条。
During Minor Heat, it is recommended to go
to bed late and wake up early, with a proper midday rest to adapt to the long
daylight hours of summer and maintain ample energy.
小暑时节,提倡晚睡早起,适当午休,以适应夏季的长日照环境,保持充沛的精力。
