What is the difference between college and university? In everyday use, these terms are used interchangeably. In specific contexts, however, they have different meanings.

What does college mean?
College is a noun. In American English, it refers to undergraduate education or an undergraduate education institution.
College是一个名词。在美式英语中，泛指本科教育或本科教育机构。
Colleges offer two- and four-year degrees in various subjects, and some may also offer graduate studies.
College可以授予多种学科的两年制或四年制学位，也有一部分college可提供研究生学习。
In both American and British English, college could also refer to an individual school or program within a university.
美式和英式英语中，college也可以指大学内的个别院系或项目。

What does university mean?
In both American and British English, university is a post-secondary institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of subjects across several programs.

在我们认知范围内的国内大学，一般都称作university，大学里的院系叫做college，但是在欧美的教育体系中college的含义要比国内更多，某些专业性较强的大学他们也称作college。如果只是单单笼统的说“大学”，在英语中university和college都是可以的。
In practical American usage, university has connotations of prestige that college doesn’t have, although there are some highly respected universities that call themselves colleges out of tradition (e.g., Dartmouth College). Still, no one talks about going to university in the U.S. After high school, you go to college, even if the college you’re attending calls itself a university.在实际美语用法中，university具有college所没有的声望内涵；尽管有一些备受尊敬的大学出于传统称自己为学院（例如达特茅斯学院）。但是，美国人没有人把“上大学”说成go to university，人们都说在高中毕业后是go to college，即便你就读的大学称自己为university。

A university is a collection of specialized schools. A college is one school. Often, universities are comprised of several colleges.
