① the scum of the earth
scum/skʌm/ 指的是液体上那种比较恶心的“浮沫，浮渣，浮垢”。
The lake near the factory was covered with grey, foul-smelling scum.
这家工厂附近的湖面上浮着一层灰蒙蒙、散发着臭气的浮垢。
不过呢，在口语中的scum也可以直接用来指“人渣；败类”。所以，the scum of the earth的意思就是“最恶劣的人渣”，是the worst type of people that can be imagined，是你能想象出的最恶劣糟糕的那种人。
Those men are the scum of the earth.

另外，scum+bag的组合词scumbag，也可以用来指某人是“卑鄙小人；混账东西，混蛋”。
② the dregs of society/humanity
dregs/dreɡz/ 的意思是指那些沉在酒、咖啡等液体中的“残渣，渣滓”，因此the dregs of society/humanity也就是“社会/人类的渣滓”。
dregs只有复数形式，所以往往指的是不道德、没有价值的一群人，而且the dregs of后也不一定只搭配society或humanity哦。

③ the lowest of the low
比最高级的lowest还要low的人，也就是没有丝毫道德标准和素质的“人渣，无赖”。当然了，the lowest of the low也可以用来表示“最低点，最低谷，最底层”，所以具体意思还是要在使用情景中理解。

同样是与low相关的表达，lowlife（复数形式：lowlifes）可以用来指“人渣，卑劣的人”，不过不同的是，lowlife更倾向于指“恶棍，罪犯”，是那些在犯罪方面“表现突出”的人。
