前几天我们认识了take you for a ride的两个含义。ride这个词虽然很简单，但在英语中它有不少很有意思的短语表达，今天我们就一起来重新认识一下这个单词吧！
英式英语和美式英语虽然都是英语，但在其中也是大有不同，就比如ride这个单词，它有“骑车”、“搭车”、“骑马”、“驾驶”等等意思。不过只在美式英语中，ride作为动词时，还有“驾驭，试图控制某人并强迫其工作”的意思，比如：
Your boss is riding you much too hard at the moment.
你的老板现在把你管得太严了。
另外，美式英语口语中，名词ride还可以指某人的“车”。
Hey, nice ride.
哎，好车。
动词词组ride on sth/sb并不是“骑在…上”，而是“依赖，依靠，指望”的意思。另一个常用的与ride有关的词组是ride sth out，意思是“安然度过”，尤指安然度过难关。
① The future of the company now rides on the new managing director.
公司的未来现在就指望新任经理了。
② Many companies did not manage to ride out the recession.
经济衰退时期，许多公司没能度过难关。
认识了单词和词组后，我们来认识几个固定搭配。a free ride并不只是“免费搭车”，实际上它还有个意思是“白白得到的东西，无本获得的利益”，是指某人在没有做任何事、出任何力的情况下，获得的机会或优势等，比如：
Just because he was the boss's son didn't mean Tim got a free ride.
就算蒂姆是老板的儿子也不意味着他就能有“免费的午餐”。
a bumpy ride和a rough ride都是一样的意思，只不过a bumpy ride是口语中的用法，它们都指“困难时期”。所以have a bumpy ride就是指“经历困难；处境艰难”。
① The construction industry is in for a rough ride this year.
建筑业今年困难重重。
② She's had a bumpy ride at work over the last few months.
过去的几个月里，她在工作上很不顺利。
英语口语中，如果你let sth ride，那就意味着你打算不采取任何行动，“听之任之；放任自流”。
Don't panic about the low sales - let it ride for a while and see if business picks up.
销售额低迷也不必惊慌——先观望一阵子，看看生意能不能有起色。
