Malaysia, Thailand among most visited by Chinese tourists during New Year: report
Thailand was the fourth most popular destination among Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year and Malaysia fifth, according to a report.
They came after Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, according to the report published by leading digital payment platform Alipay+ and Paynet.
The money spent by Chinese tourists during the first seven days of the holidays doubled from the same period in 2019 and was 10 times the amount in 2023, it said, adding that new visa-free policies at major Southeast Asian destinations "are critical enablers" of the travel boom.
Malaysia and Thailand started waiving visas for Chinese tourists in December last year.
Other preferred destinations for Chinese tourists were Singapore, South Korea, France, Australia, and Canada.
Malaysia received 100,000 Chinese visitors during the New Year holidays, a 50% increase from last year, Sin Chew Daily reported.
They spent an estimated RM1.5 billion (US$312.66 million) in the country.

中国今年春节连假一共8天。报告指出，赴海外旅游的陆客在春节假期前面7天的电子货币包与支付宝账户消费额比2019年同期增加1倍，更是2023年同期的10倍之多。泰国的交易数量遥遥领先，大马的成长幅度居冠，报告指，东南亚国家去年底先后推出的免签证政策是这波中国游客旅游潮爆发的关键因素。
马来西亚、泰国都在去年12月开始对中国旅客提供免签优惠。除了中国游客，马来西亚的交易量也在亚洲游客最受欢迎目的地排名第6。
2024年春节Alipay+在亚洲各国的电子货币包跨境消费支出总额，比2023年同期成长252%，单日平均交易额成长304%。
龙年春节期间造访中国的国际旅客使用支付宝（Alipay）交易的消费金额，比去年同期增加500%，3大常用场域包括中餐馆、旅游景点、公共交通。
