译文：
在上一代人中，美国中产阶级家庭原本可以靠辛勤劳动和公平竞争就能保持稳定的经济状况，如今因经济风险和刚出现的实际情况改变了。
翻译思路：
fair play一词应该源自于运动中，牛津词典解释为：Respect for the rules or equal treatment of all concerned；翻译为“公平竞争”是很妥帖的。
financially secure中的financially是“财政，金融”等涵义，用在家庭这个范围，还是“稳定的经济状况”合适。
最后，new realities中的reality用作复数，常用作复数，意思是“实际经历，实际情况，尤其指不愉快或者困难的真实情况”。所以，翻译为“新的现实”肯定是可以的。我翻译的时候，还是增加了很多的词“刚出现的实际情况”。

译文：
如今，一张解雇小粉条、一份恶性诊断书或者配偶去世，这些都可以使稳固的中产阶级在几个月之内就沦为新的贫困户。
翻译思路：转喻
a pink slip，小粉条。是一种转喻手法，指的是“公司终止对员工的聘用”，这种说法最早可以追溯到20世纪初期。如果公司终止聘用员工，或者让员工下岗会在发工资的信封中同时附上粉色纸条通知单。
翻译的时候，直接翻译为“一张小粉条”完全可以。因为在美国的文化背景下，小粉条的含义之一就是终止聘用。当然，翻译为中文，万一怕中文读者不懂，可以翻译为“一份解雇通知单”。我保留“小粉条”，同时把“解雇”这一层意思补充上：一张解雇小粉条。
另外，小粉条，不仅仅就是“解雇”的意思。比如在澳大利亚，五年以上的车辆年度安全检查，也有pink slip，当然还有blue slip，green slip等。在美国，pink slip还有“车主证明”的意思。
