这个句子意思好懂，也不是长难句，但并不好翻译，主要是不好说通顺，中文用一句话，略显得冗长，用几句话，又有点啰嗦。主要问题出现在英语的几个词new two-paycheck status。翻译的时候，可以好好琢磨琢磨。这就是英语，几个词，很简单的修饰关系，中文翻译起来就会啰嗦一点。
limit of something 是 “ 限额，限度 ” ，柯林斯解释为 the largest or smallest amount of something，英文解释似乎更好懂。

译文：
这样一来，他们失去了在经济困难时期一度拥有的保护伞——一个可以挣钱的后备力量，通常是妈妈，她可以在家里主要挣钱的人下岗或者生病的时候出去工作。
翻译思路：
比喻parachute 本来是“降落伞”，这里也是一种比喻的修辞手法，很生动的说明了如果还像以前那样，不是双薪收入，家里只有一个人出去挣钱，一旦家里主要挣钱的人下岗或者生病了，还有另一个人，通常是妈妈还可以出去挣钱，从而起到了对家庭经济的保护作用。这种比喻，能直译，最好直译。
