Yesterday we roughly introduced the solar
term of "Start of Summer", and today let's talk about what kind of
dietary customs are there regarding "Start of Summer".

今天来说说关于“立夏”,都有哪些饮食方面的习俗。
China has a vast territory, and the dietary
customs throughout the country are diverse and different in various places.
中国幅员辽阔,全国各地的在饮食方面的习俗也是多种多样,各有不同。
On the day of Start of Summer, there is a
custom of tasting the new in the folk area of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The
"new" mentioned here not only includes seasonal vegetables and
fruits, but also includes fresh aquatic products.

在立夏之日,江浙民间地区有“尝新”的习俗。这里所说的“新”不仅包括时令蔬菜和水果,也包括时鲜的水产品等。
The Suzhou folk proverb says, "See
three new things in Start of Summer", and the "three new things"
here refer to newly ripened cherries, plums, and wheat, which are used to offer
sacrifices to ancestors.
苏州民谚说“立夏见三新”,这里的“三新”是指刚熟的樱桃、梅子和麦子,是用来祭祀祖先的。
In Changshu, there is a saying that in
Start of Summer, there are "nine meats and thirteen vegetables" to
taste. The "nine meats" refer to shad, clams, salted eggs, sea
snails, duck, pickled fresh, marinated shrimp, cherry meat, and pomfret, and
the "thirteen vegetables" refer to cherries, plums, wheat silkworm
(new wheat rolled into thin strips and cooked), bamboo shoots, broad beans,
mallow needles, peas, cucumber, caotou, turnip, rose, and songhua.
常熟立夏尝新有“九荤十三素”之说,“九荤”指鲥(shí)鱼、鲚鱼、咸蛋、海蛳、麋鸭、腌鲜、卤虾、樱桃肉和鲳鱼,“十三素”指樱桃、梅子、麦蚕(新麦揉成细条煮熟)、笋、蚕豆、茅针、豌豆、黄瓜、苣笋、草头、萝卜、玫瑰、松花。

On the day of Start of Summer in Wenzhou,
every household eats huai beans, spring bamboo shoots, and plums.
温州立夏日,家家吃淮豆、春笋和梅子。
In Wuxi, there is a custom of tasting three
kinds of fresh food in Start of Summer, and the three kinds of fresh food are
divided into three kinds of fresh food from soil, three kinds of fresh food
from trees, and three kinds of fresh food from water. The three kinds of fresh
food from soil are broad beans, amaranth, and cucumber, the tree three kinds of
fresh food from trees are cherries, loquat, and apricot, and the three kinds of
fresh food from water are sea snails, puffer fish, and shad.
无锡民间有立夏尝三鲜的习俗,三鲜分地三鲜、树三鲜、水三鲜。地三鲜即蚕豆、苋菜、黄瓜,树三鲜即樱桃、枇杷、杏子,水三鲜即海蛳、河豚、鲥鱼。
In the Shanghai area, on the day of Start
of Summer, people eat sugar plums, fermented rice, and salted eggs, which are
called "tasting three new things".
上海地区立夏日吃糖梅子、酒酿、咸蛋,称为尝“三新”。
In the rural areas of eastern Zhejiang,
there is a custom of eating "seven-family porridge", which is to use
the beans and rice given by the neighbors among each other, plus brown sugar,
to cook a large pot of porridge for everyone to share.
浙东农村立夏有吃“七家粥”的风俗,所谓“七家粥”,就是以邻里之间互相赠送的豆、米,加上红糖,煮成一大锅粥供大家分享。

In Hangzhou, people eat "seven-family
tea", which combines the new tea of each family and is cooked together,
accompanied by fruit cakes and pastries, and everyone gathers to drink and eat
together.
在杭州,人们吃“七家茶”,将各家新茶放在一起烹煮,配以果品点心等,大家聚在一起共饮共食。
