The hulusi, also known as the huluxiao, has
a history that can be traced back to the pre-Qin period in China. It originated
in the southwestern border of China, especially among ethnic minorities such as
the Dai, Achang, De'ang, Va, and Blang in Yunnan, and is an indispensable
musical companion in their cultural life.
The structure of the hulusi is unique,
mainly consisting of three parts: a natural gourd as the resonator, three
bamboo tubes, and a built-in reed. Among them, one is the main tube,
responsible for playing the melody, and the other two are the auxiliary tubes,
usually without tone holes, only producing a sustained harmony at specific
pitches, adding a touch of mystery to the music. The selection of the gourd is
crucial, requiring a uniform shape and a solid cortex to produce a good
resonance effect. The production of bamboo tubes and reeds is also meticulous,
and the length of the bamboo tube and the thickness of the reed need to be
adjusted according to the pitch to ensure that every note can be clearly and
accurately emitted.
The tone of the hulusi is gentle and
delicate, with a hint of nasality, like a gentle breeze blowing in the
mountains or a gurgling stream, giving people a subtle and hazy beauty. It is
good at expressing gentle and delicate emotions. Whether it is folk songs, farm
songs, or folk tunes, the hulusi can bring the audience into a quiet and
distant artistic conception with its unique tone. When playing, the tone of the
hulusi is elegant and gentle, as if it can soothe people's hearts and convey
the harmony and tranquility of nature.
The hulusi is not only a musical instrument
but also an important carrier of ethnic culture in Yunnan and other places. In
local festivals, weddings and funerals, farming and sacrificial activities, the
melody of the hulusi often rings, conveying the joy, sadness, or feelings about
life of the ethnic group.
In recent years, with the emphasis on and
promotion of ethnic culture, the hulusi has not only received more and more
attention in China but also shown its unique charm on the international stage,
attracting the attention of music lovers around the world.
