The Origin and Evolution of Peking Opera
Tracing back to its source, Peking Opera
did not emerge suddenly overnight, but went through a long historical
precipitation and integration. In the middle of the 18th century, during the
Qing Dynasty in Beijing, it became the center where various local operas
exchanged and converged. Anhui Opera, Han Opera, Kunqu Opera and other local
opera genres influenced each other here, learned from each other's strengths to
make up for their weaknesses, and finally formed what we know today as Peking
Opera. This kind of integration is not only reflected in music and singing, but
also penetrates into all aspects of performing arts, creating a unique and
diverse artistic style of Peking Opera.
Roles and Genres
The roles in Peking Opera can be roughly
divided into five major genres, namely sheng, dan, jing, mo and chou, according
to the gender, age, personality and social status of the performing roles. Each
genre has its specific make-up, costume, performance style and singing, and
through these external characteristics, even without opening the mouth, the
audience can clearly understand the basic attributes of the role. It is
particularly worth mentioning the "jing" genre. Those face paintings
with exaggerated color paintings have become one of the most distinctive signs
of Peking Opera. Each pattern and color implies the character's personality and
destiny.
Music and Singing
The music system of Peking Opera is mainly
composed of two major vocal tunes, Xipi and Erhuang, which can be either
passionate and unrestrained or lingering and sentimental, and can deeply
express the inner feelings of the characters. The accompanying musical
instruments include the Jinghu, gongs and drums, etc. Their proper cooperation
sets off the plot atmosphere just right, making the performance of Peking Opera
more vivid and three-dimensional. In terms of singing, Peking Opera pays
attention to clear pronunciation and rounded tune, and emphasizes the
combination of voice and emotion. Actors use different singing techniques to
vividly interpret the joys and sorrows of the story.
Costume and Stage Art
The costume of Peking Opera is magnificent
and complicated, and every stitch and thread contains rich cultural meaning.
Different costume colors, patterns and accessories not only reflect the
identity and status of the role, but also add to the visual effect of the
stage. And the stage setting pursues simplicity without being simple. Through
symbolic scenery and props, combined with the virtual performance of the
actors, a variety of scenes are created, enabling the unlimited imagination to
be displayed in the limited space.
Inheritance and Innovation
Facing the rapid changes of modern society,
Peking Opera is also actively seeking the balance between inheritance and
innovation. On the one hand, old artists are committed to retaining the
original flavor of traditional skills, and ensuring the continuation of classic
repertoires through ways such as master-apprentice teaching. On the other hand,
young Peking Opera people try to integrate modern elements into traditional
performances, such as using modern technology to improve the stage effect, or
creating new scripts that reflect contemporary life, so that Peking Opera can
keep pace with the times and attract the attention and love of more young
audiences.
