Chinese clothing culture boasts a long
history and rich connotations. Throughout history, each Chinese dynasty had its
unique clothing styles. These garments were not only practical items for daily
life but also symbols of culture, etiquette, and social status. They reflect
the social customs and ethnic characteristics of different periods and are an
integral part of Chinese civilization.
Pre-Qin Period
Early clothing was primarily practical,
made from natural materials like hemp, ramie, and silk, with simple forms. The
"Book of Changes" (I Ching) mentions, "The Yellow Emperor
created clothing and the world was governed," marking the initial
establishment of clothing systems. With the development of dyeing and weaving
technologies, clothing began to serve decorative and status-distinguishing
functions. During the Pre-Qin period, as social division of labor and hierarchy
systems formed, clothing started to show clear class distinctions. The Zhou
Dynasty's dress codes used colors, patterns, and styles to denote social
status, creating various types of ceremonial garments like the crown attire,
court attire, and sacrificial attire.
