    1.Limit the pain, target the gain.Recognize that working for this person is "a temporary assignment. You can set limits on how long you'll tolerate it, and use the time to make yourself more marketable." Let's say you decide you can take one more year of this (assuming your boss sticks around that long). "If you figure out what you need to get out of the job to help your career, and go after it, you have a positive incentive to serve out that term," Dufour says。

    2.Avoid surprises.Autocrats, even more than most people, "hate to be blindsided," Dufour notes. "Therefore, keep them informed of significant, and even relatively insignificant, developments. They crave control and power, so feeding them tidbits of information satisfies this craving."

Instead, "wait until you're convinced your manager is making a huge mistake" -- one that will jeopardize his own stated goals -- "or until you come up with a better idea that you truly believe in."

    Then, make a concise, logical case for your approach: "Emphasize the positive outcome. Focus on what your boss will get out of doing as you suggest." If you've already tried this, keep at it: "Rehearse your argument beforehand and make sure you are stating it clearly and rationally" -- and without a trace of condescension for his (alleged) lack of technical knowledge. Sometimes, of course, it's not what you say that can trip you up, it's how you say it。

    5.Do the tasks your boss dislikes.In general, command-and-control bosses "don't enjoy extended debate and discussion, and they aren't adept at dealing with any type of 'people problem'," Dufour observes. So consider making that your specialty (which will do no harm to your own long-term career prospects either, incidentally)。

    Helping your boss compensate for his lack of soft skills "won't earn you thanks. In fact, he may resent your ability to do something he can't," notes Dufour. However, even autocrats are rarely so oblivious that they don't know, deep down, that ignoring "people problems" will eventually damage their own professional prospects -- and that, says Dufour, "is one thing they can't stomach."

  In Beijing, Three (or 8) Roommates Is Not a Crowd
  
  For many of them, China's property boom is translating into (转化成) a decidedly untelegenic (adj.不适合上电视的) lifestyle. As government stimulus funds and eager investors flock to the real estate (房地产) sector, rents across the nation are soaring(adj.飞涨的). In Beijing, where the average monthly salary is roughly RMB 3,700 ($545), a typical one-bedroom apartment rented for around RMB 2,900 ($427) a month as of June. That leaves many with no choice but to find people to share with. More and more, flatmates (n.合住一套公寓的人) are sharing small, cramped (adj.狭窄的) apartments with several other people — a lifestyle less reminiscent of (adj.回忆的) Friends than another TV favorite of Chinese youth, Prison Break.

  A generation ago, workers in Beijing were from Beijing, and most lived with their families or in company dorms(n.宿舍). Today, sharing apartments in big Chinese cities, where most people now come somewhere else, has become the norm (n.标准,规范). Landlords and rental agents are increasingly willing to rent more expensive apartments to several tenants(n.住客) at once rather than leave a flat empty while they wait to find a wealthier tenant or family, and young professionals are squeezing into (挤入)less and less space.

  The shortage of affordable housing is not exclusively a Beijing problem. Housing prices around the country have been soaring over the last 18 months, leaving both renters and first-time buyers gasping (v.气喘吁吁)for air. From Shanghai to Guangzhou, prices have risen by double digits in the last year. In the city of Haikou on the southern island province of Hainan, the average house price shot up 50% in the last 12 months. Back in the capital, as things have become tighter, there have even been tales of young office workers taking off to country villages in the hills outside the city, willing to endure a two-hour commute(通勤路程)to work each way for the reward of cheaper rent (n.租金)and their own place.

  A poll reveals that of this year's crop of (n.一批)graduates, 27% will be heading home to live with parents. Cue comments on the "boomerang(n.回飞镖,“回笼”) generation", along with explanations that young people prefer free catering and laundry in the parental(adj.父母的) home to the challenge of independence.

  What's really surprising is there are not far more. Youth unemployment currently stands at 24%, more than three times the national average of 7.7%. Given the price of accommodation(n.住宿) and the insecure(n.不确定性), temporary nature of young people's jobs, it's more a case of who on earth could actually afford to move out.

  The idea of the boomerang generation always provides plenty of fun. Just about everyone I know whose children are in this age group have one or two living at home. We grumble about(v.发牢骚) dirty dishes and compete for the most outrageous(adj.残忍的) story. I scored well this weekend, waking at 2am to hear what sounded like someone moving in. In the morning, I found this was indeed the case. My living room contained an unexplained chaise longue, several suitcases and theatre props(n.道具). Oh, and an unknown person too. Secretly we may feel pleased that being able to cope with all this marks us out as more tolerant than our own parents' generation. And, we remind ourselves, in many European countries it's the norm(n.标准) for children to live with their parents until getting married.

  But most parents are worried – for their own offspring(n.后代) and for this generation as a whole. Among the flow of humanity passing through the parental "guesthouse" the real picture of this generation emerges. Some have applied, unsuccessfully, for hundreds of jobs, some have piecemeal (adj.零碎的) or part-time work, several are taking MAs "to boost their chances" and a large number have "internships", as employers now call unpaid labour(n.劳动力). Only a few have found jobs appropriate to their qualifications(n.资历), while many are back in jobs they did before university.

  Although there are reports of recent small increases in graduate opportunities, cuts in public funding and the euro(n.欧元) crisis are both likely to have negative effects on the economy and employment. If the situation is bad here, it is dire (adj.可怕的)elsewhere. In Spain, youth unemployment runs at a scary 44%. In Greece it is at 36%, in Portugal(n.葡萄牙), 28%, and Ireland, 31.5%. There is a particularly worrying increase in the number of young people unemployed for over two years.

  But this is not just about figures(n.数据) – it's a human story. Ask the so-called boomerang generation and they'll tell you they are desperate for(adj.渴望) independence. Some, unable to find employment, are depressed(adj.精神不振的,消沉的). Meet the individuals behind the figures, and the rhetoric(n.修辞) of a "lost generation" acquires a human face. What must it feel like to apply for so many jobs, to face repeated rejection(n.拒绝), to wonder if you can ever join the adult world? How can these individuals have the key experiences of growing up? Because having a job is not just about having money, it's about developing a sense of your competence(n.能力,技能), about self-worth(n.自尊,自我价值), about learning to work with colleagues, and the complexities(n.复杂性) of contemporary(adj.当代的) society. Without that chance to grow, we aren't just looking at people who haven't worked for a period. They will be actively damaged.

  Such debate as has been had about young people and their opportunities has focused exclusively (adv.独占的,排外的)on increased student fees and university numbers. This looks like a serious distraction(n.分散注意力). However much universities improve on employability issues, it won't magic up jobs where none exist.
  这种关于年轻人以及他们所拥有的就业机会的辩论,无一例外的只是把重点放在了不断攀升的学费,还有大学越来越多这些事情上。这严重混淆了视听。不管有多少大学在改善学生就业问题上下功夫,年轻人需要的工作岗位也不会像变魔法一样被凭空创造出来。
  
  
  Perhaps it's in the government's interests not to look too closely. If the two issues of student fees and youth unemployment are put together, the implications(n.暗示) are deeply worrying for the Treasury. The budgetary(adj.预算的) implications of most universities adopting full fees (to be funded by government loans) and continued high demand for places, has begun to sink in. This will cost a lot of money. But in the context of escalating(v.逐步升级) unemployment, the fact that no student will start paying back until they earn £21,000 makes this look critical(adj.决定性的,关键的,危急的). Many of this new debt-saddled generation will be unemployed for long periods. If they eventually get jobs, they will progress more slowly, taking longer to reach payback levels. This is an economic black hole(n.黑洞) with a terrible human cost.

  A person who engages in stage-phoning is someone who talks loudly on their mobile in a deliberate attempt to attract the interest and attention of people around them. Such individuals appear to be behaving as if they were giving a performance, with the mobile as a theatrical prop, hence the use of the word stage.

  In fact, many ancient August Moon folk(adj.民间的) tales are about a moon maiden(n.少女). On the 15th night of the 8th lunar(adj.农历的) moon, little children on earth can see a lady on the moon.
  实际上,古代很多关于八月月圆的故事都跟一位月亮仙子有关。在阴历8月15的晚上,小孩子都能看到月亮上有一位女子。
  
  The story about the lady took place around 2170 B.C(公元前). At that time, the earth had ten suns circling(围绕) it, each taking its turn to illuminate(v.照亮) to the earth. But one day all ten suns appeared together, scorching(adv.拙劣的) the earth with their heat. The earth was saved by a strong and tyrannical archer (n.弓箭手)named Hou Yi. He succeeded in shooting down nine of the suns. One day, Hou Yi stole the elixir(n.长生不老药) of life from a goddess. However, his beautiful wife Chang E drank the elixir of life in order to save the people from her husband's tyrannical(adj.暴君般的,专横的) rule(n.统治). After drinking it, she found herself floating and flew all the way to the moon. Hou Yi loved his divinely(adj.极好的,天赐的) beautiful wife so much, he refused to shoot down the moon.

  People believed that the lady was a god who lived in the moon that made the moon shine. Girls who wanted to be a beauty and have a handsome husband should worship(v.崇拜) the moon. And on this magical occasion, children who make wishes to the Lady on the Moon will find their dreams come true.

  Wu Kang was a shiftless(adj.懒惰的) fellow(n.家伙) who changed apprenticeships(n.学徒期) all the time. One day he decided that he wanted to be an immortal(adj.长生不老的,永生的), so he went to live in the mountains where he importuned(v.缠着•••不放) an immortal(n.长生不老的人) to teach him. First the immortal taught him about the herbs(n.草药) used to cure (v.治愈)sickness, but after three days his characteristic restlessness(n.坐立不安,心神不定的本性) returned and Wu Kang asked the immortal to teach him something else. So the immortal taught him chess(v.下棋), but after a short while Wu Kang's enthusiasm(n.热情) again waned(v减少). Then Wu Kang was given the books of immortality to study. Of course, Wu Kang became bored (v.觉得无聊)within a few days, and asked if they could travel to some new and exciting place. Angered with Wu Kang's impatience, the master(n.师傅) banished(v.放逐) Wu Kang to the Moon Palace(n.月宫) telling him that he must cut down a huge cassia tree(n.桂树) before he could return to earth. Though Wu Kang chopped(v.砍) day and night, the magical tree restored(v.恢复) itself with each blow, and thus he is up there chopping still(adv.仍在).

  Last Monday I was sitting in my local cafe, minding my own business, when a funny thing happened.

  A guy came in wearing a long overcoat, a brown hat and sunnies. I thought it was a bit strange because it was a cool, cloudy day outside.

  A new study published in the journal Psychological Science suggests that this is because they know other people will think worse of them if they do something bad than if they let something bad happen.
