  Hi-English

Feng shui literally means "wind water" in Chinese. It's the ancient belief that energy flows through your surroundings(n.环境)and it is up to you to harness the "good energy." Several years ago, I was intrigued(adj.好奇的,被迷住的) enough by this philosophy that I took a beginner's feng shui(n.风水)class in Texas, where I was living at the time.

I quickly realized it was complicated(adj. Not only do you have to use your birthday and a formula(n.准则) to determine your element, there was also something about a tortoise(n.乌龟) shell, compass directions and more calculations. I don't remember anything from that class except that my element is "wood" and I need to avoid placing fire elements (e.g. red vase(花瓶) or red carpet(n.地毯)) in my home. Red symbolizes fire and fire burns wood.

Fast forward to today. I live in Hong Kong, where people take feng shui pretty seriously. You only have to look around the city to see that architects(n.建筑师)often include feng shui in their design. In Repulse Bay on the island's south side, there's a well-known apartment building with a large hole in the center. The hole is to allow the dragon (the Chinese symbol of good fortune) access to the sea to drink water.

You can also apply feng shui to your office.

That brings us back to the question, where's the best place to sit at work? Feng shui Master Raymond Lo says that first, a feng shui expert needs to come to your workplace to evaluate(v.评价,估计) the energy flow. He emphasizes(v.强调)the boss needs to sit where the best energy is.

"If the boss is happy, the company makes money," Lo says. Then the middle managers(n.中层经理) should be assigned(v.指定) the next most "auspicious" spots in the office. Lastly, the rank and file take up the remaining floor space. Lo also says there is also something called "money energy" - and no one should place their desk where money energy intensifies(v增强,使加剧). This is where the conference room should be - a place where strategy is planned out.

To make things even more complicated, Lo says good energy is dynamic and moves around. So over time, the most auspicious(adj.有前途的) energy can migrate to different locations in your office. I told you, feng shui isn't easy.

1.Frost's Descent——It means the climate is getting colder gradually and frost appears.

2.The first frost covers the earth and yellow leaves fly in the sky.

  3. The floor of the forest was soft to walk on; the frost did not harden it as it did the road.

  【Hi-English

As fall and winter bear down on us, many people begin to dread the disappearance of daylight and the five months of cold, dark days that follow. At northern latitudes, many people experience a lower mood, irritability, decreased energy, and changes in appetite, starting around now and lasting until spring. About 10 percent of people in northern states experience full-blown Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), with depressed mood, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, carbohydrate-craving, and weight gain or loss. Another 30 percent experience sub-syndromal SAD, a low-grade version of seasonal depression. Last month we reported on the benefits of using light therapy to help to boost mood in the fall and winter. I have recommended light therapy for many of my clients, with good results. However, I find it works best when combined with other approaches.

Here are some ways to keep the dark days of winter from dragging down your disposition:

  • Let there be light! Getting exposure to sunlight can be a powerful way to boost your mood. In fact, on a sunny day, the brightness outdoors is many times greater than the light emitted from a high-intensity light fixture. If you can go out for a walk when the sun is out, put on your overcoat and get outside. Don’t be daunted by the cold, but do bundle up so you'll be safe and comfortable. Treat yourself to the things that help you get out-of-doors on a cold but sunny day: a new, warm coat; snow boots; thermal underwear—whatever it takes.

  • Buy some bulbs. When you can't get any outdoor light, a high-intensity indoor light fixture can help. You don't need to buy a full-spectrum bulb; just use standard CFL bulbs with a color temperature of 4100 Kelvin. If you have the budget, you can try using a light box, which is designed to provide therapeutic doses of light to SAD sufferers.

  • Get moving! Boosting your exercise in the winter can provide a powerful lift to your mood and your energy. If your climate or job makes it difficult to be active outside during the day, find ways to work out at home or in the gym.

  • Eat for energy throughout the fall and winter, combining lean protein and complex carbohydrates in your meals. Limit your consumption of alcohol, sugar, and high-fat foods, all of which may temporarily lift your mood but then leave you feeling tired soon after.

  • Change your thoughts. Learning to think less negatively will help improve your mood. If you notice yourself feeling less peppy or enthusiastic during the winter, you can accept that feeling as a normal response to the dark and cold of winter without getting down on yourself about it. You can also respond to negative thoughts like "I hate winter," and "I can’t deal with this," or "Winter is never going to end" with "I know what to do to feel better" and "Winter is a challenge, and I become stronger by meeting the challenge."

  • Reach out. When the world seems colder and darker, your connections with friends and family can supply the love, warmth, and stimulation to help sustain you.

  • Reach in. Your inner life can be a source of vitality and inspiration when the natural world is gray and seems dormant. Prayer, meditation, inspirational reading, and religious observation provide inner light that can illuminate your journey through the darker days of fall and winter.

Generation rent refers to the generation of people born from the eighties onwards, who because of changes in the economic situation are more likely to rent their homes than buy them.

Owning your own home (or rather part-owning it with the bank!) has always been the norm in the UK, with those whose financial circumstances permit usually choosing to buy rather than rent. This is a phenomenon unique to Britain and contrasts with the rest of Europe and the USA, where renting is the usual option. Changes in the economic situation during the past few years however have made it increasingly difficult for first-time buyers to get started in the property market, so that there is an emerging generation, the so-called generation rent, who may never own their own homes.

The only young adults who appear less likely to join generation rent are those fortunate enough to have affluent parents with cash to spare to help them raise a deposit.

"You must work in Information Technology," says the balloonist.

"I do," replies the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," says the balloonist, "Everything you have told me is technically correct, but it's no use to anyone."

The man below says, "You must work in Management."

"I do," replies the balloonist, "But how did you know?"

"Well," says the man, "You don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help. You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault."

  Hi-English

My primary life study has been about love. Second comes economics, so here, in the form of a few rules, is a little amalgam of the two fields: the economics of love.

In general, and with rare exceptions, the returns in love situations are roughly proportional to the amount of time and devotion invested. The amount of love you get from an investment in love is correlated, if only roughly, to the amount of yourself you invest in the relationship.

If you invest caring, patience and unselfishness, you get those things back.

Stay with high-quality human beings. And once you find that you are in a junk relationship, sell immediately. Junk situations can look appealing and seductive, but junk is junk. Be wary of it unless you control the market.

(Or, as I like to tell college students, the absolutely surest way to ruin your life is to have a relationship with someone with many serious problems, and to think that you can change this person.)

In every long-term romantic situation, returns are greater when there is a monopoly. If you have to share your love with others, if you have to compete even after a brief while with others, forget the whole thing. You want to have monopoly bonds with your long-term lover. At least most situations work out better this way.

The returns on your investment should at least equal the cost of the investment. If you are getting less back than you put in over a considerable period of time, back off.

To coin a phrase: Fall in love in haste, repent at leisure.

Have a dog or many dogs or cats in your life. These are your anchors to windward and your unfailing source of love.

Ben Franklin summed it up well. In times of stress, the three best things to have are an old dog, an old wife and ready money. How right he was.

But so far, these things have always worked themselves out and this one will, too. In the meantime, they say that falling in love is wonderful, and that the best is falling in love with what you have.

Trend-benders are people who try to bring back old trends. They ride a bike to work when they can afford a car, write snail-mail whenever possible in preference to e-mail and prefer reading “real” books and publications instead of e-books.

Free-range husband is a man who enjoys a fair amount of freedom in married life. His wife would allow him a private space, understand the pressure he is suffering from work and encourage him to take part in social activities and make new friends.
Mutual trust and respect is something that really matters in marriage. Based on this, making your man a free-range husband is believed to be a wise decision. If a woman makes every effort to keep her husband sticking around all the time, that will surely use up the passion soon and lead to enmity and contempt between them.

So called self-help traveling refers that travelers themselves arrange travel route, travel time, and all the other matters during travel, without any guide and team leader. Nowadays this kind of traveling model is gaining more and more popularity among college students. According to the survey, over 80% of college students prefer self-help traveling to following a tour group.

Why are college students so fond of self-help traveling? Above all, self-help traveling gives travelers more freedom and space. College students don’t like being restricted. They want to arrange their travel as they wish. Moreover, self-help traveling provides college students a good chance to improve their adaptability and viability. Besides, the expenses in self- help traveling are controlled by travelers themselves. It is a good choice for those college students who have not much money for their disposal.

As a college student, I enjoy self-help traveling very much, and I have benefited a lot from it. For one thing, I have appreciated many amazing scenery that those travelers who follow tour groups can not. For another, self-help travel helps me learn how to deal with people better.

Most of us feel envious of famous and successful people in the world. We do not understand why they are so popular and honored while we are mere simple common folks. We all have a misconception that these people are prosperous just because they are especially gifted or because they are just "lucky".

But the fact is that most great persons have minds which are the same as, or perhaps even simpler and duller than that of ours. Yet, we refuse to believe so because our misconceptions have taken root in our stubborn minds.

Why, then, are their triumphs so great? It is because they are apt to fighting with difficulties with perseverance, without fatigue and undergo sufferings without minding the wounds. They are aware that the road to their destination will be filled with hardships. Their endurance is more powerful than that of ours for the simple reason that they submit without complaint to each storm in life. To illustrate this, let us take Columbus as an example. What difficulties and courage he had had before he discovered the New World. Had he fallen into despair, America might not have been discovered so early.

All of us wish to have a bright future. Those who remain in idleness and think that great people are different from us will never fulfill our ambitions. Those who think we are the same as great people, and believe in hard work will make our dreams come true.

[2011-11-1] 生活 | 7 Tips on How to Keep Your Love 爱情持久弥新的7个小秘密
Penny
  3

It’s not diamonds and flowers that make a relationship remain as warm, loving and intimate as it was at the start. It’s the little things. So check out the tips that follow.

1.Praise Your Partner for the Little Things

If there’s something you appreciate about your partner, from the way he or she makes scrambled eggs to how hard he or she is working on decorating the bedroom, speak up. Praise provides a reminder of your love.

  2.Be Thoughtful

The good we do tends to come back to us. When you’re thoughtful to your partner, he or she’s more inclined to be thoughtful in return. So remember to buy each other’s favourite dessert, cut out or email articles you think your partner might like, or take on the other’s jobs like arranging for your partner to have a day off, with no housework or expectations.

  3. Keep Your Promises

Failing to keep your word can destroy the unity and trust in a relationship. It’s better to say ‘Let me think about it’ than to say you’ll do something but fail to deliver.

  4.Share Your Passions

Take turns choosing an arts or cultural event to attend together each month. The point is to show your partner what you love, so that he or she can experience it as you do (or close enough). To make this work, both of you have to be flexible: someone might have to attend a football match or the theatre. The reward lies in experiencing each other’s passion. And who knows – you may have a lot more fun than you ever imagined.

  5. Kiss Under a Full Moon

On a fine evening, spread a blanket under the night sky and drink in the beauty and quiet of your surroundings together. You can talk if you wish, or simply savour the silence and the experience of being together, side-by-side, under the stars.

  6. Play the Honeymoon Game

Do something for your partner that you did when you were newly weds or first got together. Make a special meal. Send some flowers after a night of lovemaking. Tuck notes in unexpected places.

  7. Discuss the Big Things in Life

When you were courting, did you talk for hours about current events or the meaning of life? If all you seem to talk about now is the grocery shopping or how much to spend on a new sofa, reintroduce meaningful conversation into your relationship. Try this: one night, while you’re in front of the TV or in the car, make a provocative (but not hurtful) remark about something your partner cares deeply about – the government, a sportsman or woman – something that will get his or her dander up. He or she will disagree, of course, which will get the ball rolling. And keep it rolling!

  Vocabulary:
  thoughtful ['θɔ:tful] adj.
  savour ['seivə] v. 品尝
  tuck [tʌk] v. 卷起
  provocative [prəu'vɔkətiv] adj.

  【Hi-English

  一颗星 ★:是“值得”去造访的餐厅,是同类饮食风格中特别优秀的餐厅;

  两颗星 ★★:餐厅的厨艺非常高明,是“值得绕远路”去造访的餐厅;

  1. Michelin is also continuing to expand its guidebooks business in countries where it has significant tyre operations.

  2. The Michelin guidebooks are also being updated and adapted to new formats such as the iPhone, Nokia mobile telephones, GPS systems in cars and so on.

Singles Day

An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong(n.

One day they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the ’four columns’ card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in two lines). Even more of a coincidence, it was Nov 11, or 11/11. In order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it Singles Day.
