Everyone has at some point had the same problem: no matter how much you try to be consistent with your camera face, some pictures look great and others look awful.
Photographer Stephen Eastwood has finally solved the mystery - showing that the difference between a good photo and instantly deleted disaster can be down to the camera lens.
To prove his point, he took a series of portraits, using the same model's facial expression and the same lighting - but each time changing the lens.
Depending on the lens' focal length, the image will deform and affect how the image looks in photos.
The shorter the focal length, the more field of view you can capture.
But Mr Eastwood's experiment showed that the distortion continued up the focal range, albeit more subtly.
And the killer is that some of these subtle distortions can make the face prettier, while others make the face - to put it bluntly - uglier.
A larger lens (say 350mm) will flatten and widen the face of the subject.
Mr Eastwood said this could sometimes make the ears look further back - or make the nose look bigger.
Experts say a 135mm lens would produce the best, most consistently accurate results. But even then there's an element of risk.
Love is a thing of your own selves. We love and we influence each other, change each other. One day, even if we separate, those changes and influences will remain forever, and they will last longer than the love itself. Finally, you are not learned how to be in love, but learned how to love yourself.

2. Life is too short to leave us any room for regrets. Love those who are kind to you while forget those who do not cherish you.

7. Everyone of the people who says she or he does’n want to be in love .There must be someone without possibility in their hearts.
8. Do you believe in love? Yes, I do. Have you been in love? No, I haven’t. Then why do you believe it? ‘cause it makes me happier to believe it.
9. The one you love also loves you. This is a miracle. And the god names this as falling in love with each other.
10. When someone abandons you, it is him that gets loss because he lost someone who truly loves him but you just lost one who doesn’t love you.

When life throws you one more obstacle than you think you can handle, remember something you achieved through perseverance and by struggling to the end. In doing so, you’ll find you have the ability to overcome each obstacle brought your way.
When you find yourself drained and depleted of energy, remember to find a place of sanctuary and rest.

A cognitive(adj.认识的,认知能力的) neuroscientist, Ellen Bialystok has spent almost 40 years learning about how bilingualism(n.双语能力) sharpens the mind.
Q. How did you begin studying bilingualism? Q:
A. You know, I didn’t start trying to find out whether bilingualism was bad or good. I did my doctorate in psychology: on how children acquire(v. When I finished graduate school, in 1976, there was a job shortage in Canada for Ph.D.’s. The only position I found was with a research project studying second language acquisition in school children. It wasn’t my area. But it was close enough.
As a psychologist, I brought neuroscience(n.神经系统科学) questions to the study, like “How does the acquisition of a second language change thought?” It was these types of questions that naturally led to the bilingualism research. The way research works is, it takes you down a road. You then follow that road.
Q. So what exactly did you find on this unexpected road? Q:
A. As we did our research, you could see there was a big difference in the way monolingual and bilingual children processed language. We found that if you gave 5- and 6-year-olds language problems to solve, monolingual(adj.单一一种语言的) and bilingual children knew, pretty much, the same amount of language.
But on one question, there was a difference. We asked all the children if a certain illogical sentence was grammatically correct: “Apples grow on noses.” The monolingual children couldn’t answer. They’d say, “That’s silly” and they’d stall. But the bilingual children would say, in their own words, “It’s silly, but it’s grammatically correct.” The bilinguals, we found, manifested a cognitive system with the ability to attend to important information and ignore the less important.
Q. How does this work — do you understand it? Q:
A. Yes. There’s a system in your brain, the executive control system. It’s a general manager. Its job is to keep you focused on what is relevant, while ignoring distractions. It’s what makes it possible for you to hold two different things in your mind at one time and switch between them. A:是的。
If you have two languages and you use them regularly, the way the brain’s networks work is that every time you speak, both languages pop up and the executive control system has to sort through everything and attend to what’s relevant in the moment. Therefore the bilinguals use that system more, and it’s that regular use that makes that system more efficient.
Q. One would think bilingualism might help with multitasking — does it? Q:
A. Yes, multitasking is one of the things the executive control system handles. We wondered, “Are bilinguals better at multitasking?” So we put monolinguals and bilinguals into a driving simulator. Through headphones, we gave them extra tasks to do — as if they were driving and talking on cellphones. We then measured how much worse their driving got. Now, everybody’s driving got worse. But the bilinguals, their driving didn’t drop as much. Because adding on another task while trying to concentrate on a driving problem, that’s what bilingualism gives you — though I wouldn’t advise doing this.
Q. Has the development of new neuroimaging technologies changed your work? Q:
A. Tremendously. It used to be that we could only see what parts of the brain lit up when our subjects performed different tasks. Now, with the new technologies, we can see how all the brain structures work in accord with each other.
In terms of monolinguals and bilinguals, the big thing that we have found is that the connections are different. So we have monolinguals solving a problem, and they use X systems, but when bilinguals solve the same problem, they use others. One of the things we’ve seen is that on certain kinds of even nonverbal tests, bilingual people are faster. Why? Well, when we look in their brains through neuroimaging, it appears like they’re using a different kind of a network that might include language centers to solve a completely nonverbal problem. Their whole brain appears to rewire because of bilingualism.
Q. Are you bilingual?
A. Well, I have fully bilingual grandchildren because my daughter married a Frenchman. When my daughter announced her engagement to her French boyfriend, we were a little surprised. It’s always astonishing when your child announces she’s getting married. She said, “But Mom, it’ll be fine, our children will be bilingual!”
今天我们来学一个词“记忆”——【memory】 1.John hates to take notes. He always keeps everything in his head and thank God, he has a good memory.
2.All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.
3.How much memory does the application require?

New memory study records the activation(n.激活) of human brain cells(n.细胞) deep inside the living brain.
The mystery of what happens in our brains when we remember something is fascinating not only from a scientific perspective(n.观点,角度) but also because the experience of recall(v.回忆) can be so, well, memorable(adj. Thinking backwards we become sensory(adj.感官的)time travelers; recalling sights, sounds, events, emotions - all in the blink of an eye(在眨眼之间). But what happens in our brains when we travel backwards?
For years scientists have told a story that goes roughly (adv.粗略地) like this: when we experience something - say riding a bicycle for the first time - a network of neurons(n.神经元,神经细胞) in the brain are activated. Then, later on, when we recall that first experience, that same network, or something like it, is activated(被激活的,有活性的) again.
There is some roundabout(adj.迂回的,间接的) evidence that this is exactly what is going on, but nothing direct. That is, until now. A US and Israeli research group have provided the strongest evidence so far that this story is accurate(adj.精确的,准确的) by recording individual neurons inside the living human brain. One of the authors of the study, Dr. Itzhak Fried, describes it like this: "In a way then, reliving past experience in our memory is the resurrection(n.复苏)of neuronal activity from the past".

---Man: No, I wasn't.
---Officer: Yes, you were. I'm giving you a ticket(n.
---Man: But I wasn't speeding.
---Officer: Tell that to the judge! (The officer gives man the ticket.)
---Man: Would I get another ticket if I called you a jerk?
---Officer: Yes, you would.
---Man: What if I just thought that you were a jerk?
---Officer: I can't give you a ticket for what you think.
---Man: Fine, I think you're a jerk!
Let go through some words and phrases: Ticket = a monetary fine you must pay for breaking a traffic law Jerk = an insult, usually refers to someone who is mean for no reason at all 形容一些本性卑鄙的人
Gretchen Rubin: Back to the Basics of Happiness: Smile!
I'm not a very smiley person, and lately I've noticed that when I do smile, my face sometimes feels like I haven't smiled in a long time. I've been trying to remember to smile more, even just walking down the street. At first I felt a bit silly, but I quickly realized that no one minds if you're looking happy. I also try to give a real smile whenever I interact with (v.互动)someone -- buying a cup of coffee, checking in at the gym, going through security before going up to an office.
Facial expressions(n.面部表情) don't merely reflect(v.反映,表现)emotions; they also influence emotions. In facial feedback, studies show, the mere act of smiling makes people happier -- even when they smile mechanically(adv.机械地), as I'm doing, or when they're asked not to smile but rather to contract specific facial muscles.
Random(adj.随意的,无目的性的) smiling is an example of my resolution(n.决心) to act the way I want to feel: while people suppose that feelings inspire actions, in fact, actions also inspire feelings. So by acting happier, I should feel happier. And you know, I think I do. "Sometimes your joy is the source(n. 源泉)of your smile," Thich Nhat Hanh wrote, "but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy."
Also, because of emotional contagion(n.传染), people often mimic(v.模仿) the faces of people they see. One reason that people are attracted to happy people is that they catch that happiness themselves.
生活中,我们需要感谢的人、感谢的事有很多,如果仅仅只会说平时经常说的“Thanks a lot” ,”Thank you very much.”

That’s what James Cameron said at the end of his TED talk and I love it. It’s simple but powerful. Failure is an option(n.选择), but fear is not.
Unfortunately, people often do the exact opposite: failure is not an option, but fear is. They don’t tolerate(v.忍受) failure but they tolerate fear. They despise(v.轻视) people who fail but they let fear get in the way of reaching their dreams.
We shouldn’t join them, of course. Let’s be on the right side of the fence(n.

Most of us have no idea the impact(n.影响) color has on our lives. This impact of the many colors in our environment is usually not conscious(adj. Sometimes we get an uneasy feeling(n.不舒服的感觉) in certain rooms or very relaxed in another, but we call this a mood. The "color of mood" can be what is surrounding us.
Today paint companies may hire a paint psychologist(n.心理学家) to advise what shades of colors will sell best. Color psychologists also work in the decorating field. Orange is used in restaurants, because orange increases the appetite(n. A good combination(n.结合) for restaurants is pale blue or turquoise(n. A relaxed atmosphere and a big appetite are the perfect environment for a restaurant.
Blue light is used for a calming effect in some mental hospitals(n. Other hospitals are now using soft green, blue, peach and sunny yellow on walls and even sheets and gowns. These colors seem to help the patients to get well quicker.
There is thermal imaging(n.热成象) that lets us see heat in color. Edgar Cayce said the human body and almost everything in nature radiates(v.放射) energy and/or heat. Many people claim to see the colors or aura(n.光环,氛围) surrounding the human body. It is said a person's health and mood can be determined by an analysis of the aura. The health of the 7 chakras will influence the colors of the aura.
There is breathing color. That is imaging a color and breathing it deep in the lungs. Such as imaging pink and breathing it to feel universal love. Or one could meditate (v.沉思) on pink to feel the universal love.
In other words, color is in every part of life. Take a moment every day to look around you and feel the colors, enjoy the colors. Live your life in full color.
Does money buy happiness? No! Ah, but would a little more money make us a little happier? Many of us smirk and nod. There is, we believe, some connection between fiscal fitness and feeling fantastic. Most of us would say that, yes, we would like to be rich. Three in four American collegians now consider it “very important” or “essential” that they become “very well off financially”. Money matters.
Well, are rich people happier? Researchers have found that in poor countries, being relatively well off does make for greater well-being. We need food, rest, shelter and social contact. But a surprising fact of life is that in countries where nearly everyone can afford life’s necessities, increasing affluence matters surprisingly little. The correlation between income and happiness is “surprisingly weak”. Once comfortable, more money provides diminishing returns. The second piece of pie, or the second $100,000, never tastes as good as the first. Even lottery winners and the Forbes’ 100 wealthiest Americans have expressed only slightly greater happiness than the average American. Making it big brings temporary joy. But in the long run, wealth is like health: its utter absence can breed misery, but having it doesn’t guarantee happiness.

翻译原文—— “So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

Humans can actually solve problems while asleep, researchers say. Not only that, but one purpose for dreaming itself may be to help us find solutions to puzzles that plague us during waking hours.
Dreams are highly visual and often illogical in nature, which makes them ripe for the type of "out-of-the-box" thinking that some problem-solving requires, said Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist at Harvard University.
Barrett's theory on dreaming, which she discussed at the Association for Psychological Science meeting here last month, boils down to this: Dreaming is really just thinking, but in a slightly different state from when our eyes are open.
Whatever the state we're put in, we're still working on the same problems," Barrett said. Although dreams might have initially evolved for a different purpose, they likely have been refined over time so they can serve double-duty: help the brain reboot itself and problem-solve.
Barrett has studied problem-solving in dreams for more than 10 years, and documented many examples of the phenomenon.
In one experiment, Barrett had college students pick a homework problem to try to solve in a dream. The problems weren't rocket science; they were fairly easy questions that the student simply hadn't gotten around to solving yet. Students focused on the problem each night before they went to bed. At the end of a week, about half the students had dreamed about the problem and about a quarter had a dream that contained the answer, Barrett said.
So at least in the cases where problems are relatively easy, some people can solve them in their sleep.
Barrett has also extensively reviewed scientific and historical literature, looking for examples of problems solved in dreams.
"I think that dreams and REM sleep have probably further evolved to be useful for really as many of the things that our thinking is useful for," Barrett said. "It's just extra thinking time, so potentially any problem can get solved during it, but it's thinking time in the state that's very visual and looser in associations, so we've evolved to use it especially to work on those kinds of problems."

A few degrees can make a big difference when it comes to food storage. Foods can go bad if they get too warm. But for many of the world’s poor, finding a good way to keep food cool is difficult. Refrigerators are costly and they need electricity.
Yet spoiled food not only creates health risks but also economic losses. Farmers lose money when they have to throw away products that they cannot sell quickly.
But in nineteen ninety-five a teacher in northern Nigeria named Mohammed Bah Abba found a solution. He developed the “Pot-in-Pot Preservation/Cooling System.” It uses two round containers made of clay. A smaller pot is placed inside a larger one.
The space between the two pots is filled with wet sand. The inner pot can be filled with fruit, vegetables or drinks. A wet cloth covers the whole cooling system.
Food stored in the smaller pot is kept from spoiling through a simple evaporation process. Water in the sand between the two pots evaporates through the surface of the larger pot, where drier outside air is moving.
The evaporation process creates a drop in temperature of several degrees. This cools the inner pot and helps keep food safe from harmful bacteria. Some foods can be kept fresh this way for several weeks.
People throughout Nigeria began using the invention. And it became popular with farmers in other African countries. Mohammed Bah Abba personally financed the first five thousand pot-in-pot systems for his own community and five villages nearby.
In two thousand, the Rolex Watch Company of Switzerland honored him with the Rolex Award for Enterprise. This award recognizes people trying to develop projects aimed at improving human knowledge and well-being.
A committee considers projects in science and medicine, technology, exploration and discovery, the environment and cultural history. Winners receive financial assistance to help develop and extend their projects.
The awards are given every two years. The next awards will be presented in late two thousand twelve. Last year, Rolex launched the Young Laureates Program for the younger generation.

Maybe no one will come out, but this kind of waiting is the love itself.
Did you happen to catch any of the Royal Wedding the other day?
Yeah, it was lovely. I thought it was a sweet ceremony and the abbey looked really nice all decked out in flowers and all.
Yeah… I thought so, too. They looked like they were in love. I wish them all the best.
Me too, my favorite bit was the singing of the choir. It was heavenly. I wish I had that at my wedding.
You know what my favorite bit was… … the Aston Martin driving up the Mall. That made me most proud to British. A classy little car. Lovely body and that. The flyover by the RAF was good, too.
Is that all you can think about? Didn’t you like her dress?
Yes, very nice… designed by Sarah Burton, wasn’t it? From Alexander McQueen’s fashion house, isn’t she?
It was a superb dress. Nothing frilly. Simple and elegant and an exquisite fabric, too.
Best not to mention that to my wife or I’ll have to fork out an arm and a leg for one and have a second marriage.
You’re a skin flint, you are.
Nope, just believe in everlasting love. There’s no need for all that extravagance on one day. If you are so in love, you don’t even need to get married. Having each other, that’s enough.
Glad I’m not married to you.
Glad I’m not married to you either. I’d be skint before the first day of our wedded bliss.
Let’s go over some phrases now.

2.Schedule it in. I’m very busy, and so is m family. My parents and I want to make time for each other however, so I literally schedule dinner in on my Google Calendar. I treat that appointment with the same seriousness as anything else in my life. It’s a commitment to my future and what truly matters.
3.Treat it as an emergency(n. My life is booked back to back with work, appointments and various commitments – but when I had to go into surgery for appendicitis, none of the little boxes in my task list got checked off that day. Instead, my routine came to a halt as I dealt with my medical emergency. If you’re having trouble letting things slide, or aren’t sure where you can make time, then consider treating your life mission as an emergency. Clear important, but unnecessary items off your schedule for a day – and let them go. Every day that you spend on tasks that don’t matter is a day you can never recover – and that, to me, isan emergency.
What Truly Matters, Matters We all know deep down there are different things that drive us – hobbies that excite us, passions that we wish we had more time to explore, people we wish could spend more time with. I believe that identifying, focusing on, and spending time on what matters to us, is not simply a thought exercise.
Focusing on what truly matters, truly matters.
In my life I’ve gone through periods of intense(adj.强烈的), driven productivity – months where everything fell into place, and my goals almost seemed to accomplish(v.实现) themselves. At the other extreme, there have been times in my life where I was completely overwhelmed, burdened by my different projects and responsibilities – and frustrated because so many of them not only challenged me, but didn’t matter to me. There were days when I asked myself how did I end up here? How did I end up working on all these things that aren’t who I am, and that don’t represent where I am going?
Some of our projects are extremely important to us, some matter a little – and some simply don’t matter to us at all. In this guide I’d like to discuss how to define(v.界定) and focus on what truly matters – and then discuss some strategies for making time for them.
Breaking It Down Here are a few question to help you focus on what truly matters – and cut from your life items that don’t.
1.What does my life look like ten years from now? I love projecting into the future and imagining my life: mentally time traveling to picture where I want to be. The power of this exercise is even more apparent when you consider that you are the product of where you came from. Think of your favorite memories, people and events from your past and you’ll see things that have shaped you into the person you are today. Similarly, looking ten years down the road and imagining what I want helps me focus my energies today to make it happen tomorrow. If my future daydream is filled with thoughts of spending time with my family and celebrating with friends – then that tells me I need to focus on maintaining those relationships today.
2. What is my purpose? Leo has previously discussed his life’s purpose and tips for finding your own life’s mission. If you have determined your life’s mission(n.任务), that provides a foundation for where you should be spending your time – along with the activities, and ends, you should be focusing on. This is sometimes difficult because we may believe our life’s purpose is not in line with a “practical career” – but I disagree. There is no contradiction in using a “practical career” to pull yourself out of debt so you can be free for adventure, or perhaps to send your children to college. The disconnect occurs however, when your “practical career” is padding your bank account with money which means little to you – and you wish you were out living your true purpose instead.
3. What excites me? Sometimes we are scared to admit to ourselves what we really want to do, and who we really want to be because it’s not popular, or because it’s not as secure as the job we have. Deep down however, we know what excites us. We know what gets our heart pumping, and what gets us excited to jump out of bed in the morning.
