  4. What can I let slide(v. There are never enough hours in the day to do everything, absolutely everything, that I have some interest in doing. There is, however, enough time in the day to do everything that I am truly interested in, and that truly matters. Find what you can let slide -and then let it.

  5. Do the consequences have meaning Every task and project has outcomes and consequences – but consequences don’t matter in and of themselves. What matters is how much those consequences mean to us. Sometimes we fight, claw and struggle towards down a path because other people want us to have the rewards at the end, or because the ends sound impressive – but if they don’t have meaning to us, then we will not be satisfied with the accomplishment. In other cases we may have initially pursued a goal, but our interests and purpose changed. If something doesn’t mean anything to you, then regardless of how important it is to others, how impressive it may be or how important it may have been in the past, it may be time to let it go.

  Making Time
You may already know what truly matters in your life – but are finding it difficult to make time for it, and to focus on it. Here are some tips to help you make time for what truly matters:

1.Do it first. In Zen To Done Leo suggests picking your 3 Most Important Tasks (MITs) and doing them first thing in the morning. Similarly, once you find what truly matters, try to take care of it first before spending time on tasks that matter less to you. Some people have experienced significant increases in productivity when writing, working out, or meditating early in the morning. I personally believe in paying myself first with my time, and live it every day. I work on my personal goals first thing in the morning, before I do anything else. This way every day begins positively and in line with my future.

2.Schedule it in. I’m very busy, and so is m family. My parents and I want to make time for each other however, so I literally schedule dinner in on my Google Calendar. I treat that appointment with the same seriousness as anything else in my life. It’s a commitment to my future and what truly matters.

3.Treat it as an emergency(n. My life is booked back to back with work, appointments and various commitments – but when I had to go into surgery for appendicitis, none of the little boxes in my task list got checked off that day. Instead, my routine came to a halt as I dealt with my medical emergency. If you’re having trouble letting things slide, or aren’t sure where you can make time, then consider treating your life mission as an emergency. Clear important, but unnecessary items off your schedule for a day – and let them go. Every day that you spend on tasks that don’t matter is a day you can never recover – and that, to me, isan emergency.

  What Truly Matters, Matters
We all know deep down there are different things that drive us – hobbies that excite us, passions that we wish we had more time to explore, people we wish could spend more time with. I believe that identifying, focusing on, and spending time on what matters to us, is not simply a thought exercise.

Focusing on what truly matters, truly matters.

  【Hi-English

Created as planet Earth sweeps(v.扫) through dusty debris(n.碎片) from mysterious, asteroid-like, 3200 Phaethon, the annual Geminid Meteor(n.双子座流星雨) Shower should be the best meteor shower of the year. The Geminids are predicted to peak(v.达到顶峰) on the night of December 14, but you can start watching for Geminid meteors this weekend. The best viewing is after midnight in a dark, moonless sky, with the shower's radiant(n.发光的) constellation(n.星座) Gemini well above the horizon - a situation that favors skygazers in the northern hemisphere(n. In this picture from the 2009 Geminid shower, a bright meteor with a greenish tinge(n.细微的色彩) flashes through the sky over the Mojave Desert near Barstow, California, USA. Recognizable in the background are bright stars in the northern asterism known as the Big Dipper, framing the meteor streak.

  【Hi-English

I think a sense of humour can help you deal with life's difficulties. As they say, 'laugh, and the world laughs with you; cry, and you cry alone.'

  Here's a joke I heard recently:

A man visits a friend's house and is invited in to the living room. In the living room, there's a table, and on the table there is a game of chess. Next to the game of chess, there's a dog.

'That's amazing,' he says. 'Your dog plays chess.'

'Yes,' replies the man. 'It is amazing, but it isn't so amazing: we've played six games and he has only beaten me twice.'

This isn't the funniest joke in the world, but having a joke in mind and a sense of humour can help you stop taking life too seriously.

  【Hi-English

Limiting beliefs are one of the main reasons why many people are dissatisfied with their lives and get frustrated. It is also the main reason why many people are stuck living the same life every single day. I have experienced a lot of limiting beliefs in the past and I still do right now, however I have learned how to understand my mind better to deal with these useless thoughts (notice how I mentioned useless thoughts).

1.The reason you get limiting beliefs

Many of the limiting beliefs that you have right now are programmed in your mind because of the past experiences that you have encountered. It may be a thought of a close friend or family member constantly crtitisizing you or a co worker or your boss giving you an identity that isn’t really alligned with who you truly are. This, of course is just one example.

Many of the limiting beliefs you encounter are also programmed in you based on the environment that you were brought up in when you were a child. Beliefs than get harder to change once you reach your adulthood (although it is possible for anyone to change their thinking at any time).

  【2.State of Mind
  心境

The state of mind you currently are in determines what you are going to attract into your life and your level of success. When you are in a state of mind where you are constantly pessimistic, complaining, or you constantly tell yourself, “I CANT DO THIS OR THAT”, your frame of mind is in a very negative state. When you are in this state of mind, you are immediately sending signals to your brain and stopping your creativity from working. When you get used to that belief, you keep thinking life is suppose to be the way it is at the current moment. For example, if you are around people that are always criticizing other people or are jealous, you will think that that is how everyone in life is. You will program your mind to be in that STATE. If you are not careful this can be toxic.

  3.Mental Reframing

When you mentally reframe an experience or an image, it means that you are changing the way that you perceive it. Let me give you an example; Maybe you experienced being criticized or someone telling you that “you are nothing and that you are worthless”. Successful people have the capability of taking negative experiences and reframing them so that they can see opportunity instead of being disappointed.

When you change the perception of a negative experience and use it towards your advantage, your mind will automatically be programmed to perform at a peak level.

When I cold call on my sales calls, I go through a lot of rejection. However, I have trained my mind to treat every rejection as a positive experience because I learn more about what customers want. Rejection to me means that I am growing mentally and emotionally. I hope you see where I am getting at here.

  【Hi-English

The Polar Express

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Home Alone

  Topic: A Lucky guy
  Host: Chris (上海浦东中心)

Last Monday I was sitting in my local cafe, minding my own business, when a funny thing happened.

A guy came in wearing a long overcoat, a brown hat and sunnies. I thought it was a bit strange because it was a cool, cloudy day outside.

He looked around the cafe for a few seconds, took off his glasses and sat down in a chair facing the door.

Jane, one of the waitresses, brought him a menu. He looked at it briefly, then ordered coffee and a sandwich.

When Jane went off to get his order he took a newspaper out of his coat pocket and began reading the sports page on the back.

A few minutes later Jane came and put his order on the table.

He took a bite out of his sandwich and was about to have some coffee when his cell phone rang. He took it out of his pocket and answered it.
  "Yeah."

He listened for a few minutes, closed his phone and picked up his paper. He turned to the front page.

Dear Economist: Can you help me win the lottery?
  By Tim Harford

I have started playing the national lottery in an attempt to(试图做…)resolve my worsening financial situation. While I am aware of the improbability of winning, I was wondering if I would improve my chances by sticking with the same numbers rather than using the randomly (adv.随意地) generated “quick pick”?
  Peter, Canada

  Dear Peter,

You seem to have a rather charming scenario(n.假想) in mind, with you playing the role of a little lost child, and the lottery machine playing the role of parent, diligently (adv.勤奋地)searching for you. This is called a “rendezvous(会合点) problem”, and, in general, you would be better off staying where you are and letting the lottery machine find you.

But whether you can shave 35,000 years off is beside the point. The lottery machine is not trying to find your number. It has no memory of previous combinations, and is equally (un)likely to pick any of the 14 million. Pick at random, write down your birthday ... it makes no difference to your chance of winning – although if you write down unusual numbers, it will minimise the likelihood that if you win, you’ll have to share your prize.

In case you are not a long-time reader, I will repeat my advice as to how to enjoy the thrill of the lottery without the fool’s bet. Choose your numbers, but don’t buy a ticket. You’ll win almost every week – the fear that your number might actually come up is an adrenaline rush(肾上腺素,刺激感) to beat them all.

Personal Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating(v.激励) yourself to turn this vision of the future into reality.

The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely(adv.精确地) what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate(v.集中) your efforts. You'll also quickly spot the distractions that would otherwise lure you from your course.

More than this, properly-set goals can be incredibly motivating, and as you get into the habit of (养成...的习惯) setting and achieving goals, you'll find that your self-confidence builds fast.

  Achieving More with Focus(n.

Goal setting techniques are used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. They give you long-term vision and short-term motivation. They focus your acquisition(n.获得)of knowledge, and help you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in (以…为傲) the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind (n. By setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set.

【Ten Lies You’ll Hear Before Pursuing Your Dream】

Here are ten ill-advised tips (lies) people will likely tell you when you decide to pursue your dreams(v.实现你的梦想) and the reasons why they are dreadfully(adv.

  1. You can follow your dreams someday, but right now you need to buckle down(v.稳住)and be responsible.

Someday? When is ”someday”? “Someday” is not a day at all. It’s a foggy generalization(n.模糊的概念) of a time that will likely never come. Today is the only day guaranteed to you. Today is the only day you can begin to make a difference in your life. And pursuing your dreams is what life is all about. So don’t be irresponsible(adj. Don’t wait until “someday.” Make today the first day of the rest of your new life.

  2. You’re totally screwed(adj.完蛋、失败的) if it doesn’t work out.

Wrong! You’re not even close to being screwed. In fact, the worst case scenario is that things don’t work out and you have to go back to doing exactly what you are doing right now.

  3. It’s safer to stay at your day job.

Sure, I suppose. But you know what’s even safer than that? Going home, locking yourself in your bedroom, and never, ever coming out. And just like that, you will have flushed(v.冲刷) your entire life and your dreams down the toilet. Remember, safer doesn’t always mean better.

  4. That’s impossible!

It’s only impossible if you never do anything about it. The reason certain things seem impossible is simply because nobody has achieved them yet. But this doesn’t mean that with your help these things won’t become possible in the future. If you truly dedicate yourself to an end result, almost anything is possible. You just have to want it bad enough.

  5. Only a lucky few “make it.”(只有少数的幸运儿才能成功)

That’s because those lucky few got off their rear ends and did something about it! They had the drive(n.驱动力), determination, and willpower(n.意志力) that you have right now. You can be one of them. It’s up to you(由你决定), and only you.

  6. You might fail. And failing is bad.

Failures are simply stepping stones to success. No matter how it turns out, it always ends up just the way it should be. Either you succeed or you learn something: win–win(双赢). The biggest mistake you can make is doing nothing because you’re too scared to make a mistake. If you can’t handle failure, then you can’t handle success either.

  7. You don’t have access to the right resources.

It’s not about having the right resources; it’s about exploiting(v.开发) the resources you do have access to. Stevie Wonder couldn’t see, so he exploited his sense of hearing into a passion for music, and he now has twenty-five Grammy Awards(n.格莱美奖) to prove it. Get it?

  8. You need more money saved before you can take the first step.

You don’t need more money. You need a plan. You need a budget. Eliminate(v.排除) ALL the nonessential (adj.不重要的,非本质的) costs in your life. If pursuing your dream requires you to leave your day job, figure out the absolute minimum amount(n.最少量) of income that you realistically(adv.实际的) require to live. Studying those who have succeeded with similar ventures(n.冒险) also helps. But above all, take baby steps. Don’t be foolish and assume that you must have a certain amount of money saved right now, or that you must quit your day job today in order to pursue your dreams. Instead, ask yourself, “What actions can I take right now with the money and resources I have right now that will bring me closer to desired goal?”

  9. You don’t need any help. It’s smarter to go after it alone.

You are the sum of the people you spend the most time with. If you hang with the wrong people, they will negatively(adv.消极地) affect you. But if you hang with the right people, you will be far more capable(adj.能干的) and powerful than you ever could have been alone. Find your tribe(n.部落,群体) and work together to make a difference in all of your lives.

  10. That sounds like a lot of hard work.

You’re darn right it does! But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. I think success in life hinges on(v.取决于) one key point: finding hard work you love doing. As long as you remain true to yourself and follow your own interests, values, and dreams, you can find success through passion. Perhaps most importantly, you won’t wake up a few years from now working in a career field you despise, wondering, How the heck am I going to do this for the next thirty years? So if you catch yourself working hard and loving every minute of it, don’t stop. You’re onto something big. Because hard work ain’t hard when you concentrate on your passions and dreams.

Disregard(v.漠视) these misguided(adj.误导的) bits of nonsense and you’ll be well on your way to fulfilling(v.实现) your dreams. Now get out there and make a splash!

LL: Gosh, there is hardly any one here, Li Hua. This party is really dead!

LH: Larry.

LL: Well, because there aren't very many people here, there isn't much conversation and laughter. When a party isn't lively, we say it is DEAD. And this party is dead.

LL: I hope so. Speaking of places being dead today, I went into work for a little bit to get some things from my desk. There was no one in the office - it was completely dead.

LL: I guess the college campus must be dead now, too.

The campus has been dead for two weeks.

LL: So, Li Hua, do you mind being on campus when it is dead like it is now?

LL: Oh, I bet the library is completely dead! I mean, who would be studying over the break?

LL: I know what you mean about the convenience. This year I made sure to do my Christmas shopping at a time when the shopping mall was really dead.

I cannot imagine a mall being dead during the holidays.

LL: I went early on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Since most people work during those times, it was pretty dead at the mall.

LL: That's right, Li Hua. Hey, look, the party isn't so dead any more! Some more people have shown up, and the music has started.

LH: The party isn't dead at all.

  ******

LL: Sure, I'd love to dance, Li Hua. Now the party is really happening!

LL: You are right, Li Hua. It is the opposite of a "dead" party. A happening party is one that is lively and exciting - and where lots of different things are happening.

LL: Frank has done a good job. It is because of parties like this that I love the holidays. Christmas and New Year's are such happening times of the year.

LL: Why do you like spring and summer, Li Hua?

LH: 放春假和暑假我可以到外地去,visit some more happening places.

LL: I can't imagine a more happening place than New York City. I mean here in New York there is always something going on!

LL: I suppose that is true. I've heard San Francisco has a very happening art scene.

LL: I don't know, Li Hua. I visited Memphis once, and I didn't think it was a very happening place. But then again, I am not a fan of Blues music.

LL: Elvis was famous for his wild parties. Look, the party is really happening now.

LH: Come on, Larry. Let's go have some fun!

LL: Okay, Li Hua! Now this is my idea of a happening time!

Daniel: I'd like to eat a hamburger and a bottle of coca-cola.

Grandpa: Hey, kid, that's wrong. It's a Chinese restaurant. Let's eat something traditional.

Daniel: Then there is nothing particular I'd like to eat. Grandpa, what's your favorite here?

Grandpa: The Chinese rice pudding. Your father loves it, too. You wanna try?

  Daniel: Sure. Is it sweet?

Grandpa: Yes, of course. But I think they can make you a salty one, too.

Daniel: Great, I want it spicy.

Grandpa: Come on. Don's go too far.

Daniel: I want it to be special. And you know that I always like hot food.

Grandpa: OK then. We shall ask them to put some red chilli on it.

Daniel: I'm sure I'd like that.

  Grandpa: I hope so.

Recently the topic of green travel has been widely debated which has aroused public attention and has been more and more popular with people. To some extent, it has become a fashion. Undoubtedly, green travel has a pround impact on both enviroment and social, for its significance cannot be denied.

Green travel, especially public transport, makes a positive contribution to the environment and society. On one hand, public transport has the potential to reduce transport CO 2 emissions, which is a major contributor to local air pollution and smog. In this sense, green travel makes the environment clean and gives people a healthy living environment. On the other hand, public transport plays an important role in reducing the social costs of transport include traffic jam and time taken away from the family while commuting and vulnerability to fuel price increases.

We have only one world we can live in. I hope through green travel can we protect the enviroment and save resources. In my opinion, no matter where we go, we are supposed to choose green travel. If you are near to the place which you go to, you can go there on foot or by bicycle. In this way can we protect our environmen and keep fit. If you are far away from it, you can choose going there by bus or by taxi with your friends.

Unfortunately, we don’t often clear space to make room for all this new stuff.

The beginning of the year is a great time for renewal of energy and taking on the things we’ve always wanted to tackle — clutter, fitness, work we’re passionate about, debt, and so on. But it’s also a great time to clear out your life, starting out the year on a blank page that’s ready to be filled.

While everyone’s life is different, I’ll share some of what I do to clear out my life.

Review the year to think about what I learned, what mistakes I made, what I accomplished.

Clear my schedule as much as possible. That often means saying no to people.

Wrap up old projects, end commitments to people, so that my work plate is clearer than normal.

Toss out old fitness and eating plans, to make room for new experiments.

Clear my email inbox. If I haven’t answered the email recently, it’s probably not important, so I archive it. Act on or answer other emails, so that my inbox is emptied.

Clear out other inboxes. That might be an inbox on a social network, or a list of things I wanted to do or read, or any kind of list really. File them away under someday, or delete or archive. Anything that’s taking some mental energy because I know I need to get to it, gets cleared.

Clear my computer files. Usually this means deleting a bunch of files I don’t need, but I also just consolidate files into one folder or put them in an online archive (like in Dropbox).

Clear clutter. If there are areas that have become cluttered, I clear them out. Often it just means taking a box or bag of things that I’ve been meaning to donate to Goodwill.

Clear pantry and refrigerator of junk. Old crap that’s been lying around. Left with just good whole ingredients for healthy foods.

This might take a couple days, working off and on in little bits. For some, it might take longer. But when you’re done, it’s amazing. Your mind is clear and refreshed. You feel like you’re ready to take on anything.

To be honest, I do these things regularly throughout the year, and it’s great to keep a clean slate most of the time. But the new year is always a perfect opportunity to clear everything at once.

  Hi-English

1.Mistakes are an essential part of education.

2.One thorn of experience is worth a whole wilderness of warning.

3.The tragedy of the world is that those who are imaginative have but slight experience, and those who are experienced have feeble imaginations.

4.Too much experience is a dangerous thing.

A: No one is getting all their work done during the work day. We need to do some brainstorming to come up with a time-management solution for our office.

B: Well, what do you suggest? It's not that we are all wasting a lot of time. The fact is, we're understaffed. People just have too much to do.

A: So you think we should hire some new people? That is one possible solution. What else could be the problem?

B: Maybe we do have some problems with time-management. If people were always on time to work, they might get more done in the morning before lunch.

A: That's true. Also, perhaps we could shorten the lunch break from one hour to forty five minutes.

B: Hmm, adding fifteen minutes to the workday could be good, but I wonder if it would actually make a big impact on the employees' output. I still think there is too much work.

A: We ended up right where we started. Maybe it is time to look for some temp workers to help with a few projects. That would lighten everyone's load.

What’s the best way to solve a problem?

  1. Accept the problem.

This is the one I try to do first when I run into a problem and I use it almost every time. When you accept that the problem already exists and stop resisting then you also stop putting more energy into the problem and “feeding it”. Now it just exists (well, more or less, you might still feel a bit down about it). And you can use the energy you previously fed the problem with – the energy that probably made the problem look bigger than it was – to find creative solutions to the challenge.

2.Ask yourself: what’s the worst that can happen?

This is another one to do early on. You can easily to use your mind to blow problems all out of proportion. By asking this question you can restore the problem to it’s src size. And realize that the worst case scenario - if you actually define it - is perhaps not so pleasant but something you can handle and solve.

  3.Gather some good knowledge.

Information about your problem can often decrease that uncertain anxiety and fear we face when we are challenged with something. Knowledge wisps away the clouds of fear around a problem. And we often find that the problem might not be as bad as we thought.

4.Try to figure out possible problem along the way.

This is something you can do before the problem even arises. Be prepared. When you research – as described in point # 3 – also try to find out what others in the same situation ran into, what kind of challenges they faced. Ask people what they did. If you don’t have anyone to ask then books, forums and blogs are good resources for gathering the personal experience of people. Also, be on the lookout for local groups and organizations. Google it and see what you find. If you keep your eyes and ears open you are sure to find something helpful.

  【

  5.Ask for help.

You can ask people for advice on what to do and what they did in similar situations like yours. But you can also ask for more practical help. You don′t have to solve every problem on your own and sometimes it feels better to have someone by your side, even if it is just for emotional support.

  6.Use the 80/20 rule.

Use 80 percent of your time to find solutions and only 20 percent to complain, worry and whine. It might not always be easy but focusing your energy, time and thoughts in this way is much more beneficial to you and others than doing the opposite.

  7.Use Parkinson’s Law.

This law says that a task will expand in time and seeming complexity depending on the time you set aside for it. For instance, if you say to yourself that you′ll come up with a solution within a week then the problem will seem to grow more difficult and you′ll spend more and more time trying to come up with a solution. Combine this law with the 80/20 rule to find solutions quickly. Focus your time on finding solutions. Then just give yourself an hour (instead of the whole day) or the day (instead of the whole week) to solve the problem. This will force your mind to focus on solutions and action.

  8.Keep your motivation up.

It′s easy to be discouraged, especially if you fear failure and your first and second solution to a problem didn′t work. You might feel like just giving up. Then it′s time to give yourself a boost of motivation. Try a few of the techniques described in 25 Simple Ways to Motivate Yourself and 5 More Ways to Motivate Yourself. Changing your mental state to a brighter, more positive and more motivated one can make all the difference in the world. It will keep you going. Even though you might just a few minutes earlier felt like all hope was gone.

That is the enduring oddity about Han. People have always expected more of him. When he squirmed the host told him to get used to it. “You are a public personage now like the American President ” she said. “People will have all kinds of demands of you.”

Loong?!

STEVE: No, it's not. Not at all. I'd probably freeze my lungs.

JOSEPH: Wait for me a minute. I'll go over to the gym too.

  STEVE: You?
  你?

JOSEPH: Yes, why not? Just let me get my gym clothes together.

STEVE: I didn't know you could exercise.

JOSEPH: What do you mean by that? Everyone can exercise!

STEVE: Yeah, I know. But you? I always thought you were only good at lifting beer bottles to your mouth.

JOSEPH: No, not at all. I was on the swimming team in high school. And I'd like to do some weight training (n. They have decent equipment at that gym.

STEVE: You're going to lift weights? Hah!

JOSEPH: Are you laughing at me?

STEVE: I'm sorry. I just can't imagine you lifting weights.

JOSEPH: Maybe not. But I want to start. I need to get in shape. I feel these past couple months that my energy is low.

STEVE: It's true. If a person doesn't exercise, they get sluggish (adj. That's why I keep running. Even in the winter.

JOSEPH: Well, then maybe I need to change my character, don't I?I don't want to become a fat slob (n.

7 Ways to Get a Positive Start on the Day

Getting up in the morning can sometimes be difficult. So what can we do about it? How can we wake up fresh and ready to great the new day with a positive attitude? Here are some things you can do in the short term and long term so that you will wake up refreshed and energetic in the morning.

  1. Organize your bedroom so that when you first open your eyes you will see beauty. Consider placing art on your walls that brightens your mood, living plants on the dressers that serve as a reminder that you are a part of the cycle of life, and planting a tree or flowering shrubs outside your bedroom window for beauty.

  2. Even before getting out of bed, say something meaningful to yourself out loud. It doesn't have to be profound, just a few words that affirm that this is your day to live, to make meaningful choices, and to celebrate.

  3. Playing music in the morning can set your mood for the day. Consider creating a playlist of your Top 20 Feel Good Songs. Soothing music can help relax, while rhythmic beats might get you dancing in the shower, and party beats can provide a sense of fun.

  4. Be mindful of the quality of air in your bedroom. Open the windows often to let out the stale air and let in air that is fresh and full of oxygen.

  5. Turn your bedroom into a serene oasis where the worries of the day melt away, and the grand potentials of life greet your eyes in the morning. Choose luxurious bedding, elegant sheets, perfect pillows, and a quality mattress. You deserve it!

  6. Develop a pleasant morning routine that makes you eager to get out of bed. Try going for a light morning walk before showering, meditating, doing some light yoga stretches to get your body moving, or writing in a journal. Experiment and find a routine that works best for you.

  7. Have something to be excited about today. When you wake up, think about one specific action or nice thing you can do for yourself that day... then make a solid decision to do it. When you have something you are excited about, you are more likely to get out of bed alert and looking forward to the day.

If you tend to wake up feeling groggy, grumpy, or even sad, consider using one or more of the above tips to help boost your morning mood. These easy ways to perk up help you take charge and feeling more confident to face whatever the day may bring.

  Spend your free time wisely

In today’s fast paced, high stress world people are working longer hours than ever, and often collapse at day’s end in front of the television to relax enough to begin again in the morning. However, television watching, for most people, does not really lower stress. Studies show that TV viewing in excess of(超过)an hour or so actually creates stress and, especially in women, may lead to depression. Most individuals are unaware that incorporating some exercise into their end of will make them more energetic since it increases energy and stamina(n.毅力) levels.

Wise use of leisure time does not mean getting an advanced degree, although the mental stimulation gained through education is unbeatable in keeping your mind active. Learning new things nearly always adds a spark to your daily life, especially if it is a favorite topic, such as sport, fashion, or art. Also, browse your bookstore or library to find books on your interests. Try to replace a half hour TV watching with reading.

It is estimated that in the United States currently, many individuals have as few as 2 good friends. Long work hours and car commutes act to isolate people. This isolation is deadly. Find ways to congregate(v.聚集)with people at the end of the day and on weekends. Often this can be best done by combining activities, such by joining a walking group to get both exercise and companionship. Taking a class will stimulate your mind and allow you to meet others with similar interests. Hobbies are great for reducing stress and provide another opportunity for social interaction.

Using our free time to aid our overall health and well being may include these elements and many more, such as going to concerts and spending time with family. For many people, spirituality, whether in the form of organized religion or enjoying nature, is necessary to retain a sense of balance in life. All of these activities are good uses of leisure time, as is taking in the occasional film or watching a few TV programs. But overall, the key is to spend less free time being passive. The best ways to use free time allow us to are to be mentally and physically active, spend some time out doors, and interact with other people on a regular basis.

My recommendation is that, whether or not you track your spending, at least do the following:

Stop the bleeding. Stop using your credit and debit cards immediately. Cut them up, or put them in the freezer in a ziploc bag filled with water, effectively freezing your cards. Also stop taking other loans(n.贷款), either from banks or finance companies or friends or family. Stop getting into more debt.

Start saving now! The next most important step you can take, in the beginning, is to start a small savings account if you haven’t already. Begin depositing into it regularly, at least $100 per paycheck but more if you can. If you can’t find $100 then see the next step for how. Make it an automatic deposit, the first bill you pay each payday, because it is the most important! A savings account will help you smooth out your finances — when an emergency comes up, like your car breaking down or someone having to go to the hospital, you won’t be thrown back into debtedness or brokedness. You will have some cash to pay for that emergency, and you can use your regular paycheck for regular expenses.

Look at discretionary(adj. If you can’t find $100-200 to save per paycheck, then you need to cut some things from your spending. This is where tracking your spending comes in handy, but even if you don’t, you know some of the extras you spend on — cigarettes, coffee, snacks, candy, desserts, eating out, magazines, shopping for clothes or gadgets(n.小机械,小器具) or toys or shoes, books, going out … these are just a few of the examples. I’m not saying you need to cut everything out, but if you can cut a few of them, or maybe just one at a time, that can add up. Then, take the money you didn’t spend on those discretionary items, and put that amount into savings each payday. Increase this over time. (See How I Save Money.)

  【
Make a budget(n. I know, it’s a dreaded word for most of us. But it’s not that hard, and if you set it up right, it’s fairly simple. I recommend using a simple spreadsheet. List all your regular expenses (rent, car, utilities, internet, etc.) and their amounts, and then your variable expenses (groceries, gas, eating out, etc.), and then your irregular(adj.不规则的,偶然的) expenses (things like car maintenance or medical that might not come up every month, but break them into estimated monthly expenses — if you spend $600 a year on car maintenance, budget a $50 monthly expense). Now match that up against your income. The expenses should be less.

Use the envelope system for your variable expenses such as food and gas. This is optional(adj.可选择的,非强制的), but it’s a good tip. I’ve been using it myself, and it works like a charm. Let’s say you set aside three amounts in your budget each payday — one for gas, one for groceries(n.食品,杂货), one for eating out. Withdraw those amounts on payday, and put them in three separate envelopes(n. That way, you can easily track how much you have left for each of these expenses, and when you run out of money, you know it immediately. You don’t overspend in these categories. If you regularly run out too fast, you may need to rethink your budget.

Start thinking about your goals, and planning for them. When do you want to retire(v. How often do you want to travel? When do you want to buy that dream house? Do you want to save for your kids’ college education? Think about what you want in life, and start planning to save for them, especially once you’ve done all the above.

Once you’ve gotten beyond these steps, you should be past the paycheck-to-paycheck syndrome(n. Now there’s a whole world of personal finance options available to you, including investing your money for your goals. But getting past these first stages is important.

Day 294 Entertaining for business success

Business lunches are growing in popularity. Business breakfasts, however, are not a part of Chinese business culture except in Guangdong, Hangzhou and Fujian Province, where the “morning tea” is very popular. Evening banquets are the most popular occasions for business entertaining. Generally, these events start between 5:30pm to 6pm, and last for two hours. If you are the guest, you should arrive on time. Banquets are hosted with varying degrees of extravagance, usually in the restaurant. Wait to be seated, as there is a seating etiquette based on hierarchy in Chinese business culture. Generally the seat in the middle of the table facing the door is reserved for the host. The most senior guest-of-honor seats directly to the left. Everyone else is seated in descending order of status. The most senior member seats in the centre seat. Follow this seating pattern if you are hosting a banquet or a meal in your residence, whether for business or purely social reasons: The host is the first person at the table allows to begin eating by declaring first toast. Then the rest of the company can proceed with the meal. If you are the host, take the first piece of the most valued food and put it on your guest-of-honor’s plate after the first toast. This will signify that eating can proceed and it’s considered a friendly gesture. Business is not discussed during the meal.

首先介绍这个词组:work over time, 表示“加班”:

I have a quite tight schedule, so I have to work over time to meet the deadline of this marketing report.

Don’t wait for me for dinner; I might work over time tonight.

  “Work extra hours”

I have to work extra hours tonight to go over your proposal.

You don’t need to work extra hours, just improve your work efficiency.

“Burn the candle at both ends”

Did you burn the candle at both ends last night, look at your bags under your eyes.

I’ve been burning the candle at both ends. The boss has been on everyone’s case lately and has been piling on a lot of work.

J: What was your wedding ceremony like, Abigail?

A: My husband and I got married in a registry office with just two friends there as witnesses. But then we had three parties to celebrate.

J: Three parties? That's quite a lot. That must have been expensive!

A: Well, since my husband and I are from two different countries, and we live in a third country, we decided to have one in each country. It wasn't actually that expensive.

J: Were your parents upset that they weren't there to see you get married?

A: I would have liked them to be there, but they couldn't afford to fly out to see us, and we couldn't afford to fly out to see them, so they understood.

J: Did your husband's family get to meet your family?

A: My husband's parents flew out to meet my family when we got married in my hometown, so that was great. Some people spend ridiculous amounts of money on extravagant wedding receptions, but we agreed that the wedding party should be less about money and more about family.

J: That makes sense. Did you go on a honeymoon?

A: We waited until our one-year anniversary to go on our honeymoon to Africa.

J: You really didn't have a very traditional wedding, did you?

A: Not at all, but we don't have a very traditional marriage either, so it suited us perfectly!
