Maybe you even have nightmares! Why do we do it then? Very simply put, we do it because it is fun to make the unreal real.

Great movies evoke emotions, and horror movies do it easier than most genres.

Fear is the quickest and most dependable emotion that movie makers can bring out in us.

The point is, we are all moved by fear. We are not all moved by drama, or comedy, or sadness. Of course there are certainly exceptions to the rule, but in general, most people react to scary movies in the same way, with a scream!

  Talk Deeply, Be Happy?

It may sound counterintuitive(adj.违反直觉的), but people who spend more of their day having deep discussions and less time engaging in small talk seem to be happier, said Matthias Mehl, a psychologist at the University of Arizona who published a study on the subject.

“We found this so interesting, because it could have gone the other way — it could have been, ‘Don’t worry, be happy’ — as long as you surf on the shallow level(n.浅层次) of life you’re happy, and if you go into the existential depths you’ll be unhappy,” Dr. Mehl said.

But, he proposed (v.主张,提议), substantive conversation seemed to hold the key to happiness for two main reasons: both because human beings are driven to find and create meaning in their lives, and because we are social animals who want and need to connect with other people.

“By engaging in (通过参与) meaningful conversations, we manage to impose(v. 施加) meaning on an otherwise pretty chaotic(adj.混乱的,无序的) world,” Dr. Mehl said. “And interpersonally, as you find this meaning, you bond with(v.与···联结) your interactive partner, and we know that interpersonal(adj.人际关系的)connection and integration is a core fundamental foundation of happiness.”

The happiest person in the study, based on self-reports about satisfaction with life and other happiness measures as well as reports from people who knew the subject, had twice as many substantive conversations(n.实质性交流), and only one-third of the amount of small talk(n.闲聊) as the unhappiest, Dr. Mehl said. Almost every other conversation the happiest person had — 45.9 percent of the day’s conversations — were substantive, while only 21.8 percent of the unhappiest person’s conversations were substantive.

How to Banish (v.驱逐) Doubts in Three Steps

As doubts are so insidious(adj.阴险的), how do you beat them? It’s three simple steps, but each one is a bit more difficult than they sound:

  1. Become aware(adj. Doubt gets its power mostly because it is in our subconscious(n.下意识), and we’re not aware of the effects it has on us. Instead, we have to bring it to the forefront(n.显著位置) of our minds. And that means concentrating on our thoughts, and trying to search out those doubts and negative(adj.消极的) thoughts as they come up. The ones that say, “Maybe I can’t do this. Maybe it’s not realistic(adj. If you make a conscious effort to be aware of these doubts, you can catch them and beat them.

  2. Squash(v.粉碎) the doubt. Once you’ve become aware of the doubt, imagine that the doubt is an ugly little bug. Now step on it, and squash it with the bottom of your shoe. Not literally, of course, but in your mind. Exterminate it. Do not let it live and spread!

  3. Replace it with something positive(adj. Now that you’ve squashed the doubt, replace it with positive thoughts. It sounds corny(adj.老土的), but trust me, this works: think to yourself, “I can do this! Others have done it, and so can I! Nothing will stop me.” Or something along those lines, appropriate to(v.使合适,认可)whatever it is you’re doing.

You have to continue to be vigilant(adj.警惕的), and be aware of your doubts before they stop you cold in your tracks. This is a constant process as you pursue your dreams, not a one-time thing. Doubts, like insects, will continue to come back, even after you’ve killed the first wave or two. You can’t let them thrive(v.茁壮成长)and overcome you.

The time you spend at the office may be the most stressful part of your day, but it doesn't have to be. You have a greater ability to shape your office environment than you may realize.

  1. Take breaks throughout the day. It will help clear your mind and relieve pressure. Something as simple as going to the water cooler (n.冷水机) for a drink may do the trick (v.

  2. Enroll in (v. 入学, 参加) a noontime or an after-work exercise class. This will give you a chance to unwind (v. 释放紧张,放松) and a way to relieve stress (v.

  3. To help your workday(n.工作日) go smoothly, try pacing your activities: Do more demanding work in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier work later in the day, when you may be tired.

  4. Try listening to music recordings, such as a pounding surf or songbirds, to help you relax. Use headphones if you'll be listening to them in the middle of the workday.

5.If your stress comes from job insecurity, take stock of (v. Update your resume, and remind yourself of your skills and strengths. Also, make sure you keep up with new developments in your field.

  6. Don't let work rumors, which are usually false, cause you worry. A co-worker may just be thinking out loud (v.

  7. If your office is less structured (or if you are the boss), consider a company mascot (n. A cat or dog can do wonders (v.创造神奇) for workers' morale (n.

  Mayday:

1.“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Can you hear us? Over!”

2.“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Rear cabin door opened in flight, explosive depression in flight deck and cabin”.

C: I know! But I still wish the weather would make up its mind!

Summer begins/beginning of summer

  1. The summer when I was seven was a very happy time for me.

  2. Summer is here again. It's time to put on my shorts.

  3. Well, you've been running all summer. Maybe it's time you stopped, and you turned around and faced it.

  Ethan: Oh. That bad?

Ethan: It looks like it’s going to be an ongoing problem that will get worse with each passing day.

Sally: Yes, we should do our best to protect the environment, or there could be dire consequence.

  【Hi-English

The American Melanoma Foundation recommends that everyone wear sunscreen daily to get the best protection against the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays--particularly on the face, neck and hands, which receive the most sun exposure. To get the most benefit from your sunscreen, it is important that you choose a sunscreen that is the right type for your activity and skin type.

  Instructions

  1. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreens with at least an SPF 15. Broad-spectrum formulas block both UV-A and UV-B rays and offer the highest level of protection from the sun's ultraviolet rays. UVB radiation are the rays that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer, while UVA rays absorb deeply into the skin and cause wrinkles and premature aging. The SPF factor refers only to the sunscreens UVB protection--not its UVA protection.

  2. Choose a waterproof sunscreen if you will be swimming or participating in activities that will cause you to sweat. Although the waterproof formulas will keep your skin protected longer, you will need to reapply it after excessive sweating or a long swim.

  3. Consider your skin type when choosing a sunscreen. Sunscreen formulas are available for both sensitive and oily skin types to help prevent clogged pores and skin reactions in highly sensitive people.

To ensure the freedom of your mind, here are several rules to help guide you. If you feel like any of these don’t apply to you, please break them.

  1. Don’t be a tool.

We live our lives based on templates(n.模板)of what we think we should do. We take jobs we don’t want because they make us feel important (even though they make us hate our lives). We try to fit a role based on society and other people’s expectations. The only way to reclaim the freedom of your mind is to stop living your life by a template and pave your own way.

  2. Put yourself on auto-response.

We throw away a ridiculous amount of opportunities simply because we can’t make up our minds. We paralyze ourselves with the auto-response “I don’t know.” We tell ourselves that we’ll figure it out in the future, but we’ll likely never know how everything will turn out in advance.

Change your auto-response “I don’t know” to “I’ll figure it out.”

Accept that sometimes stumbling in the dark is the only way to find the light switch.

  3. Stop betraying yourself.

The natural tendency of the mind is to compare and contrast everything. One side of your mind says “this is the right choice,” while the other side says “you’re joking right?”

Regain the freedom of your mind by being impeccable with yourself, and never using your mind against you.

  4. Freedom is a state of mind.

Contrary to popular belief, freedom isn’t given freely. It is not something passed out at birth. You’ll never be free unless you unabashedly proclaim it within.

Claiming ownership over your mind is realizing that there is no path to follow but your own. There is no price you can put on the freedom of your mind.

  Don’t out-source(v.外包) your freedom;

Homogeneity is the bane of life.
  Keep Your Direction

There are two types of freelancers.

On one hand are those who have been forced into self-employment as service providers, because they’ve lost their jobs and are having a hard time finding another one.

On the other hand are those who would be freelancing no matter what: even if the job market were booming, and even if the Internet weren’t around to give so many opportunities to work from home. They would still be hawking their services, working in their pajamas, and being completely happy doing it.

The latter are what I call freelancers at heart. They have the freelancing mindset. For them, freelancing is more than about working from home.

  What Freelancing Is REALLY About

I’ve only been freelancing for two years, not at all as long as many others out there. However, I recognize that true freelancers–those who do so by choice and not by circumstance–have a different way of thinking.

In this post, I describe the five characteristics that make up the freelancing mindset.

  1. Independence
Freelancers crave independence… from bosses and employers, from “the establishment,” from structures and hierarchies imposed upon them by somebody else.

Sure, we work for clients. In a way, they’re our bosses, because we have to meet their requirements and satisfy their expectations. Unlike bosses, clients can be chosen or rejected. We can sever relationships with a client if things aren’t working out, or if we don’t like how they’re treating us.

This isn’t very easy for somebody who’s an employee. Quitting your job is not something an employee can do lightly, unless you have a lot of money stashed in the bank, or a job offer waiting in the background.

Freelancers are willing to self-direct, to self-manage, and to be our own bosses–including all the responsibilities this entails.

  2. Adventure

The freelancing mindset is one that is open to new experiences and challenges, and is always looking for adventure. In contrast, an employee mindset wants predictability and routine.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a stickler for routine, and if I veer away from it, my productivity suffers.

Yet in spite of my daily routine, I’m always working on new projects, learning about new things, meeting new clients and prospects, developing new skills, and redesigning my business.

For other freelancers, part of the adventure is working in your home office one day and in a coffee shop the next. Or, working while traveling the world. Our lives are like a create-your-own-adventure book.

  3. Risk

True freelancers are not averse to risk. With our independence comes more responsibility, more accountability for our lives.

Not having a fixed income every month, for example, is part of the risk. The risk may scare us, but it doesn’t stop us. It’s also part of the adventure.

This uncertainty is more than others can bear. If I were the sole breadwinner of my family, I’m not sure I could put up with this myself. (In fact, the reason I took so long to finally plunge in my dream to be self-employed was because I wanted to make sure that my family wouldn’t go hungry if I failed.)

  4. Creativity

Freelancers tend to be creative people. I say this not just because a lot of us are writers and artists and photographers. Programmers, virtual assistants and other service providers are creative in their everyday lives as well.

Our work are forms of self-expression. Our daily lives are a reflection of what we believe in and stand for. We’re creative in the way we handle the daily problems and challenges of freelancing. We don’t rely on others for solutions.

  5. Idealism

Finally, the freelancing mindset is characterized by idealism. This is what makes some of us stick through the hardships, failures and pitfalls of freelancing.

We believe in a “better world,” where one doesn’t have to fit a mold to succeed in life. We believe that fancy titles are meaningless (and if not, we can give ourselves a fancy title anytime we wanted to). We believe in the freelancing lifestyle, and we’re committed to make it work.

We believe we can be happy, even prosperous and downright wealthy, doing what we love.

  In Conclusion

Freelancing is all about the desire for more freedom and all that it entails. This freedom means we’re solely accountable for our own success or failure, for our happiness or misery, for our wealth or poverty.

There are no bosses, no backstabbing co-workers, no unfair HR policies to blame. Unless you embrace this, then freelancing will suck.

If you don’t believe this in your heart, then you will resent the work it takes to find clients. You’ll hate not having a regular paycheck and paid sick and vacation days. You’ll reject having to work long hours occasionally (am I the only one who worked longer hours while employed?).

Some freelancers have a freelancing work arrangement, but they’re employees at heart. They’re the ones who will jump the freelancing ship at the first opportunity of a good job. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong. After all, freelancing isn’t for everyone.

  TutorTrivia - Fireworks

Many celebrations generally reflect or incorporate local customs and the characteristics of different areas. For example, The Thai New Year is celebrated with water fights in the streets, and it happens to fall during the hottest time of year, making it a bit easier to deal with the extreme heat. In colder parts of the world, many celebrations revolve around cooking, warm fires, and lots of food to fight off the chilly winter.

Summer, though, is the beginning of an abundance of activities, holidays, celebrations and fun, all surrounding the change of seasons and the warmer weather it brings. Many people like playing at the beach, going swimming, or other outdoor activities that let them bask in the summer sun.

One event that’s been gaining more popularity lately is the Penghu Fireworks Festival. It started in 2003 and has continued to attract attention from both domestic and foreign tourists. The weather is much better in May than in the cold January weather for the New Year, and many people enjoy traveling to this beautiful island to see the fireworks display over the ocean.

There’s only one problem, however: the scarcity of transportation options to this small island. If you don’t book your flight or ferry far enough in advance, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to get out there.

To mitigate problems with such a large number of people trying to view the fireworks display, the celebration has been lengthened in past years, affording more people the opportunity to see this spectacle. It has become one of the largest tourist events of the year for the area, and it draws a great deal of business for the hospitality industry. Will you be going this year?

  (4) mitigate ( v.
They were hoping the meeting would mitigate further problems.

  (5) afford ( v.
The later deadline afforded us the opportunity to finish the job on time.

  (6) hospitality ( n.

Will 3-D last? What will be the next global cinematic(adj.电影的) hot spot(n. What young stars will still be around 10 or 20 years from now? Hard questions to answer, since a critic’s (n.批评家)job is not prophecy(n.预言) so much as the anticipation of surprise. But the other type of question — which did not always come from the elders in the crowd — was not surprising at all. Why aren’t there any good movies anymore?

In strictly(adv.严格来说) technical terms, this is true enough. The machinery(n.机构,体系) of production and distribution(n.分布)is in the midst of an epochal(adj.新纪元的) change, part of the rapid and convulsive digitalization(n.数码化) of everything under the sun. If you go to a movie theater, you are less and less likely to see a film in the traditional, literal sense. Cans and reels have been replaced by hard drives and digital files, and some of the old material hallmarks of cinema — the grainy swirl of emulsion as the light passes through the stock, the occasional shudder(n.战栗,发抖)of sprockets sliding into place, the whirr and click of the projector — are quickly taking on an aura of antiquity. Movies are shot and shown digitally and increasingly distributed that way as well, streaming onto the screen in your living room or in your hand.

Mr. Ebert is generally immune(adj.有免疫力的) to the golden-ageism that has become a critical default position; he embraces the old and the new with equal ardor(n. But the sense of loss he expresses in the face of changing technology resonates with(v.产生共鸣) the gloom I encountered on Long Island. It can be hard to escape, and even harder to argue against, the feeling that something we used to love is going away, or already gone. This is less a critical position or a historical insight than a mood, induced by the usual selective comparisons and subjective hunches. Back then (whenever it was) the stars were more glamorous, the writing sharper, the stories more cogent(adj.有说服力的,有信服力的) and the critics more powerful.

The transition from analog to digital technology has the somewhat paradoxica(adv.自相矛盾地) effect of making those monuments more numerous and imposing(adj. As a platform for criticism, the Internet lends itself to the endless making and circulation of lists, and it has also become a gathering place for cinematic antiquarians of all stripes and sensibilities. At the same time the history of film is now more widely and readily accessible than ever before. We may lament the end of movie clubs and campus film societies that presented battered prints of great movies, but by any aesthetic (as opposed to sentimental) standard, the high-quality, carefully restored digital transfers of classics and curiosities now available on DVD and Blu-ray offer a much better way to encounter the canon.

And yet movies, at the moment, feel especially fragile(adj.易碎的) and perishable(adj易腐烂的). That may be because film is so much younger than the other great art forms, which have had centuries to wane, wax, mutate and cross-pollinate. But there is also something about cinema’s essentially modern character that makes it vulnerable to fears of obsolescence. The camera has an uncanny ability to capture the world as it is, to seize events as they happen, and also to conjure visions of the future.

  Cut your teeth

  Cut one’s teeth
cut your teeth doing something

1.They had just graduated from school and were anxious to cut their teeth on their job.

2.He cut his teeth in management as a project leader for a middle-sized company.

He had cut his editorial teeth on the London Evening Post.

  Topic: At the Dentist
  Hosts: Cameron & Elizabeth (上海徐家汇中心)

Sam is talking to Mary about his toothache

Mary: Hi Sam. What’s the matter? Are you in pain?

Sam: Yes. I have a horrible toothache. I can hardly think straight.

Mary: What is wrong? Do you have a cavity(n.

Sam: Yes. The last time I was at the dentist, he told me that I needed to get a filling. He warned me that if I ignored the problem, it would only get worse.

Mary: I take it that you chose to ignore your dentist’s warning. Why were you so foolish? You could have avoided all the pain.

Sam: To be honest, I was afraid. I once had a terrible experience at the dentist. I had to have a tooth extracted(v.拔,萃取) and it was so sore (adj. It hurt terribly.

Mary: Didn’t the dentist give you any medicine to stop the pain?

Sam: He gave me a little anesthetic(n.麻醉剂), but perhaps it wasn’t enough. Also, the anesthetic injection was a nightmare. I saw the needle that the dentist used and it was huge.

Mary: I completely understand your problem, Sam. Unfortunately, you will probably need root canal now. This is a very expensive, long and excruciating(adj. Getting a filling will feel like a picnic(n.[俚]轻松愉快的事情) in comparison to this.

Sam: I always feel better after speaking to you, Mary.

Let’s go over some phrases now.
can’t think straight: to be unable to consider things carefully or correctly

  How to Whiten Your Teeth

Step1. Brush and floss(牙线)regularly to reduce or prevent stains.

Step 2. Try whitening toothpastes. Though heavily advertised, these only partially whiten teeth and don't provide a complete remedy (n. Very few whitening toothpastes have undergone any type of clinical trial, and ones that are too abrasive (adj.研磨的) can damage teeth or make them very sensitive.

Step 3. Get regular dental cleanings, which remove many food and tobacco stains. No amount of cleaning will remove the severe staining left by tetracycline (n.四环素) or systemic disease because these pigments (n.色素) lie inside the tooth; you'll have to take more aggressive measures against these.

Step 4. Consider the two options, in-office and at-home treatments, for bleaching(v.漂白) your teeth. A dentist performs in-office treatments by coating(v.给…涂层) the teeth with a bleaching agent (漂白剂), then using periodic flashes of light to activate the solution. Treatments last 30 to 60 minutes, and the complete procedure often requires several appointments. In at-home treatments, patients wear a mouth guard fitted with bleaching gel 2 hours a day for two weeks, depending on the severity of staining.

  a stone’s throw

If you describe one place as a stone’s throw from another, you mean that the first place is very close to the second.
