If any European capital knows how to enjoy the good life, it's Vienna. Compared to most modern urban centers, the pace of life here is slow. Locals linger(v.逗留) over pastry(n.糕点) and coffee at cafes. Concerts and classical music abound. And chatting with friends at a wine garden is not a special event but a way of life.
For many Viennese, the living room is down the street at the neighborhood coffeehouse, which offers light lunches(便餐), fresh pastries, a wide selection of newspapers, and "take all the time you want" charm (just beware of the famously grumpy(adj.
For another royally(adv.王室般地) good experience, head to the wine gardens. Clustered(v.密集) around the edge of town, mostly in the legendary(adj.传说的) Vienna Woods, wine-garden restaurants feature cold-cut(冷荤菜肴) buffets(n.自助餐) paired with(v.与…相配) fine Austrian wines in an old-village atmosphere with strolling(v.散步的) musicians.
From July through early September, a thriving people scene erupts (v.喷发) each evening in the park in front of the City Hall, where free concerts are broadcast on a giant screen. Scores of food stands and picnic tables are set up. There are no plastic cups, just real plates and glasses -- Vienna wants the quality of the dining experience to be as good as the music that's about to begin.
In this sleepy city, culture is king and locals are experts in the art of good living. Any traveler with an interest in slowing down and experiencing the finer(adj.好的,出色的) things -- a good cup of coffee, fine wine, heavenly(adj.如天堂般的,优美的) music, or a Sacher torte (萨克大蛋糕) with whipped cream(被搅拌成的奶油)-- will feel right at home.

1. Take breaks throughout the day. It will help clear your mind and relieve pressure. Something as simple as going to the water cooler (n.冷水机) for a drink may do the trick (v.

3. To help your workday(n.工作日) go smoothly, try pacing your activities: Do more demanding work in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier work later in the day, when you may be tired.
4. Try listening to music recordings, such as a pounding surf or songbirds, to help you relax. Use headphones if you'll be listening to them in the middle of the workday.
5.If your stress comes from job insecurity, take stock of (v. Update your resume, and remind yourself of your skills and strengths. Also, make sure you keep up with new developments in your field.
6. Don't let work rumors, which are usually false, cause you worry. A co-worker may just be thinking out loud (v.
7. If your office is less structured (or if you are the boss), consider a company mascot (n. A cat or dog can do wonders (v.创造神奇) for workers' morale (n.
In my life I’ve gone through periods of intense(adj.强烈的), driven productivity – months where everything fell into place, and my goals almost seemed to accomplish(v.实现) themselves. At the other extreme, there have been times in my life where I was completely overwhelmed, burdened by my different projects and responsibilities – and frustrated because so many of them not only challenged me, but didn’t matter to me. There were days when I asked myself how did I end up here? How did I end up working on all these things that aren’t who I am, and that don’t represent where I am going?
Some of our projects are extremely important to us, some matter a little – and some simply don’t matter to us at all. In this guide I’d like to discuss how to define(v.界定) and focus on what truly matters – and then discuss some strategies for making time for them.
Breaking It Down Here are a few question to help you focus on what truly matters – and cut from your life items that don’t.
1.What does my life look like ten years from now? I love projecting into the future and imagining my life: mentally time traveling to picture where I want to be. The power of this exercise is even more apparent when you consider that you are the product of where you came from. Think of your favorite memories, people and events from your past and you’ll see things that have shaped you into the person you are today. Similarly, looking ten years down the road and imagining what I want helps me focus my energies today to make it happen tomorrow. If my future daydream is filled with thoughts of spending time with my family and celebrating with friends – then that tells me I need to focus on maintaining those relationships today.
2. What is my purpose? Leo has previously discussed his life’s purpose and tips for finding your own life’s mission. If you have determined your life’s mission(n.任务), that provides a foundation for where you should be spending your time – along with the activities, and ends, you should be focusing on. This is sometimes difficult because we may believe our life’s purpose is not in line with a “practical career” – but I disagree. There is no contradiction in using a “practical career” to pull yourself out of debt so you can be free for adventure, or perhaps to send your children to college. The disconnect occurs however, when your “practical career” is padding your bank account with money which means little to you – and you wish you were out living your true purpose instead.
3. What excites me? Sometimes we are scared to admit to ourselves what we really want to do, and who we really want to be because it’s not popular, or because it’s not as secure as the job we have. Deep down however, we know what excites us. We know what gets our heart pumping, and what gets us excited to jump out of bed in the morning.
4. What can I let slide(v. There are never enough hours in the day to do everything, absolutely everything, that I have some interest in doing. There is, however, enough time in the day to do everything that I am truly interested in, and that truly matters. Find what you can let slide -and then let it.
5. Do the consequences have meaning Every task and project has outcomes and consequences – but consequences don’t matter in and of themselves. What matters is how much those consequences mean to us. Sometimes we fight, claw and struggle towards down a path because other people want us to have the rewards at the end, or because the ends sound impressive – but if they don’t have meaning to us, then we will not be satisfied with the accomplishment. In other cases we may have initially pursued a goal, but our interests and purpose changed. If something doesn’t mean anything to you, then regardless of how important it is to others, how impressive it may be or how important it may have been in the past, it may be time to let it go.
Making Time You may already know what truly matters in your life – but are finding it difficult to make time for it, and to focus on it. Here are some tips to help you make time for what truly matters:
1.Do it first. In Zen To Done Leo suggests picking your 3 Most Important Tasks (MITs) and doing them first thing in the morning. Similarly, once you find what truly matters, try to take care of it first before spending time on tasks that matter less to you. Some people have experienced significant increases in productivity when writing, working out, or meditating early in the morning. I personally believe in paying myself first with my time, and live it every day. I work on my personal goals first thing in the morning, before I do anything else. This way every day begins positively and in line with my future.
That's what you think! You're out of your mind. Give me a break! Nonsense! Who do you think you are! It's none of your business.

Let’s go over some phrases now. I can’t stand him any longer. What’s going on between you and Gary? He has such a short fuse that even a little piece of friendly advice sets him off. If he could…try not to lose his temper so easily, he would be more popular. No wonder he threw a fit. His popularity is really a sore spot.
1. I'm so fed up with your words. Cut the crap. 我受够了你的废话,少说废话吧. get fed up with someone/something,解释为“受够了某人或者某物”。
2. Hey! Wise up! 当别人做了什么愚蠢的事时, 你可以说, "Don't be stupid" 或是 "Don't be silly." Grow up.
3. You eat with that mouth?
4. You are dead meat. You’re dead meat You’re peeping at my diary and you’re dead meat!
5. Don't you dare! 或者How dare you! Don’t you dare?
6. Don't push me around. Don't push me around.
7. You want to step outside? 或者You want to take this outside? 还有一些类似的用法,如:“Do you want to pick a fight?
Michael forgot to bring his passport for his flight to Sydney. What an airhead!
The opposite of an airhead is an egghead. An egghead is a very studious and intellectual person. However it isn’t always used in a complimentary manner.
For example:
John is such an egghead, he should get out more and enjoy himself.
If you say that someone can’t see the wood for the trees, you mean that they are so involved in the details of something that they forget or do not realize the real purpose or importance of the thing as a whole. 1. His fairness and clarity of vision often helped those who could not see the wood for the trees reach the correct decision.
2. We are so much involved in detail that we are reduced to almost total inability to see the wood for the trees.

Three Unconventional (adj.不寻常的) Ways to De-stress and Release Tension
As we move through our daily routines we are often faced with obstacles and challenges which can lead to some degree of stress and anxiety. So to become more relaxed and free of tensions it is important to break away from(从…挣脱)your ordinary routine and find ways to de-stress.
1. Massage your ears. The ear massage is a fantastic way to release endorphins (脑內啡: 脑分泌的具有镇痛作用的氨基酸) in your brain and make you feel good. The beauty is that it only takes a few minutes. Start by gently rubbing(v.擦,摩擦) your earlobes (n.耳垂) with your thumb and index finger. Then squeeze (v.按压) the outer edges of your ears all the way to the top.
2. Finger paint. If you thought that getting messy (adj.脏乱的) and painting with your fingers was strictly for kids, think again. Finger painting allows you to have fun, be artistic and play in a child like way. It gives you permission to express your creativity and spontaneity (n.自发性) without expectations. So why not be the creator of some new abstract art pieces.
3. Enjoy a staycation. Instead of travelling somewhere on a holiday, stay at home and enjoy a local vacation. To make it an adventure, get a map of some nearby hiking(n.徒步) trails (n.踪迹) and plan some day hikes. Try a new activity such as outdoor photography. Visit some local cafes that sounds interesting and that you’ve never been to before.
As we get caught up in the moment of being busy sometimes we just need to step back, let go of (释放,放开) what we are doing and pursue new little passions that dissolve(v.溶解, 解散) tension and creates stress free, happy experiences. I sincerely hope you give one or some of these a try and remember to have fun, be in the present moment and watch your anxieties melt away (融化).
You can say ‘give me a break’ after someone has said or done something, to show that you think that they are being very annoying or ridiculous. Leave me alone.
1. Give me a break! Why can they say something so irresponsible?
2. Give me a break. You have held the floor for half an hour.
We all want our kids to be successful. We get them math tutors, drive them to summer drama camps, buy them fancy tennis rackets (乒乓球扳), and encourage them to study with the best violin teachers– all so that they have no barriers to success. However, kids are sprinkled (v.喷,洒, 点缀) with achievements so much, so early, and so easily, and they believe that succeeding in the real world will be the same.
Praise effort and mastery. Kids can be praised for innate (adj.内在的) abilities (“Great job getting that grade. You are so smart.”), or kids can be praised for putting in the effort to master a skill or task (“Great job getting that grade. You really applied yourself and figured out the material.”).
Research shows that praising innate ability can actually decrease your child’s motivation and perseverance (n. If a kid believes her success is due to her intelligence or natural gifts then she will feel that any result is beyond her control-either she is a good enough soccer player to make the team or she isn’t. Further, this mindset means every challenge could expose (v.暴露) an innate deficiency (n.缺乏,不足)-no one wants to take a test where the result will determine whether or not they are talented or smart. These kids are more likely to avoid challenges and quit quickly. On the other hand, if a kid thinks success is due to hard work, then she will feel that she controls the outcome of any challenge, and will see failure as a mandate (n.命令) to work harder. These kids have much greater long-term success. Of course, you can still tell your kids they are smart or talented, but try to focus on how they applied themselves and mastered certain skills rather than just declaring them gifted little geniuses (n.

Take money from one area and spend it in another
1. Government (n. 政府) spending on education has not increased. Some area have improved, but only as a result (n.结果) of robbing Peter to pay Paul.
2. If the restaurant reduces price for food in order to get more customers(n. 顾客), but in the meanwhile(adv.同时) reduces staff's salaries(n.薪水) in order to cut cost, it is just robbing Peter to pay Paul.
---Obama: I feel obliged (adj.必须的,有必要的)to take maybe one question from the Korean press(n.媒体).since you guys have been such excellent hosts(n. Anybody? This gentleman right here , he’s got his hand up. He’s the only one who took me up on it. Go ahead(v. And I’ll probably need a translation, though, if you’re asking the question in Korean. In fact, I definitely will need a translation.
---Rui: Unfortunately, I hate to disappoint you, President Obama, I’m actually Chinese. But I think I get to represent the entire Asia.
---Obama: Absolutely.
---Rui: We’re one family here in this part of the world.
---Obama: Well, your English is better than my Mandarin (n.普通话)also. But — now, in fairness(公平起见), though, I did say that I was going to let the Korean press ask a question. So I think that you held up your hand anyway.
---Rui: How about will my Korean friends allow me to ask a question on their behalf? Yes or no?
--Obama: Well, it depends on(v.取决于) whether there is a Korean reporter who would rather have the question. No, no takers?
---Obama: This is getting more complicated (adj.复杂的) than I expected.
---Rui: Take quick, one question from an Asian, President Obama.
---Obama: Well, the — as I said, I was going to — go ahead and ask your question, but I want to make sure that the Korean press gets a question as well.

3. I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Today Topic: A Lousy Morning
I have had a lousy morning.
First of all I didn't get enough sleep last night. I stayed up late working on a report and didn't get to bed until three in the morning.
The alarm woke me at six-thirty as usual. I turned it off and immediately went back to sleep.
At seven the noise from my upstairs neighbours woke me up again. It sounded like a herd (n.群)of elephants was in the flat above.
I got out of bed, walked into the bathroom and splashed some water on my face to wake me up.
I went into the kitchen to make a much-needed cup of coffee. I turned on my coffee-maker. Suddenly there was a flash and the coffee-maker exploded. The lights went out too.

To cut a long story short, every fuse in the place had blown. I had to get in an electrician to fix it. It took him all day, plus $400, to fix the wiring.
Of course that meant nothing worked all day- my computer, my TV, my stereo. I couldn't even cook anything to eat - I have an electric stove, not a gas one.
Boy, what a great start to a birthday!
Let’s go over some phrases now. 让我们一起来回顾一下有用的短语吧! lousy - bad, terrible 糟糕的 alarm - alarm clock 闹钟 sounded like a herd of elephants - was very loud 听起来像一群大象,形容十分吵闹 herd - a group of animals (sheep, cows, elephants) 牧群 flat – apartment 公寓 flash - a short, fast light 快速闪过的光 exploded - blew up, like a fire cracker or a bomb 爆炸 to cut a long story short - don't give all the details or tell every piece of the story, just the ending blow a fuse - a fuse is an electrical safety switch that turns off the electricity when there is a problem. It "blows" or turns off the power to protect the wires and equipment. stove - the gas or electric equipment we cook on 炉子 “oh great a great start”, “just what I needed” - used here in a negative or sarcastic way 一种反讽的用法 - it wasn't great (good), it was very bad 表示非常糟糕的 - I didn't need it, I needed it not to happen (we often say "it was the last thing I needed") 其实是我不希望这件事发生。
Awkward Silences: 4 Seconds Is All It Takes to Feel Rejected(adj.
It's the pause that doesn't refresh(v.使精神振作,使精力恢复), the awkward moment that you relive over and over and over after you've realized that once again, you've put your foot in it.
New research from Holland suggests that good conversational flow has a powerful effect on people's feelings of self-esteem(n.自尊心) and belonging(n.归属感), and that even brief — just four seconds long — silences during a conversation are enough to, as Tom Jacobs puts it in Miller-McCune:
...elicit(v. 焦虑) feelings of incompatibility(n.不相容) and exclusion(n.排外).
"Conversational flow is associated with positive emotions, and a heightened(adj.被提高的) sense of belonging, self-esteem, social validation(n.确认) and consensus(n.认同)," a research team led by psychologist Namkje Koudenburg writes in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. "Disrupting(v.使中断) the flow by a brief silence produces feelings of rejection and negative emotions."
For the study, researchers performed two experiments in which they studied participants' responses to awkward silences. In the first, 102 college students read one of two stories. The first version described someone making an insensitive remark — "I think obese people should pay for two seats on the bus" — which was followed by an obvious silence. In the alternate story, conversation flowed easily after the remark.
The students were asked to imagine themselves as being the person who made the faux pas(n. Not surprisingly, they reported feeling more anxious, rejected and less self-assured(adj.有自信的) in the scenario with the awkward silence than in the alternate version.
The researchers suggest that sensitivity(n.敏感) toward signs of rejection and exclusion arose during our evolutionary history(n.进化史) — one in which being excluded from a group could literally mean the difference between life and death. These days, luckily, the consequences of social rejection are typically far less dire(adj.可怕的) — even if it doesn't feel that way at the time.
Be yourself. Most VIPs I’ve known are authentic(adj.可信的) people. They don’t hide their flaws(n.缺陷), and in fact, oftentimes, use them to their advantage – their little colorful quirks(n. Be yourself and true to your principles(n.原则), and you’ll work your way into the hearts of people who recognize and appreciate the real you.
Ask about others. Ever have a conversation where you knew the other person was just going through the motions? They didn’t ask logical follow-up questions, which proved they either weren’t paying attention, or worse, they didn’t care about you. I don’t know about you, but that leaves a horrible impression on(留下···的印象) me. I’m more likely to think well of the person who hung on my every word, or at least seemed interested in what I was saying. It’s human nature – people like people who like them!
Promote(v.激发)others’ interests. Be a champion for other people and their causes. Be a cheerleader(n. Talk about the good things other people are doing. Not only does this help spread the word to interested people, but it also makes you look like a VIP! When you have something you’re looking to promote, people will likely offer to help you without you even needing to ask.
Don’t trash(v.说坏话) other people. This should probably go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. If you’re trashing other people, it’s not likely to reflect well on you. If you’re talking badly about a mutual(adj.共有的) friend to me, I can only imagine what you’d say to another friend about me.
Be positive (or at least entertaining). Nobody wants to be around someone who is always miserable(adj. Be cheerful, or at least be entertaining or interesting, and people can’t help but think highly of you.
