  a Mickey Mouse job

  1. You have no chance to get a raise since what you’re doing is just a Mickey Mouse job.

  2. The charity has been described as a Mickey Mouse operation.

Josh: Joey, how do you do it? You have a successful career, a good marriage, a happy family and you never seem stressed out?

Joey: Ahh, you want to know my secret to balancing my work and personal life.

Josh: Yeah, I sure do. I am so busy at work that I don’t have anytime to spend with my family and then when I am with them I am usually very tired and not in a good mood.

Joey: Maybe you need to manage your time better.

Josh: I try but I am just so busy at work. I am always stressed out. Then when I get home I am tired and often unhappy.

Joey: I understand you situation 100%.

Josh: So what can I do?

Joey: Many years ago a teacher of mine taught me something very important. He said, “never bring your work home with you and never bring your home to work!”

  Josh: What does that mean?

Joey: If you had a bad day in the office you need to leave that stress in the office. And if you had a disagreement with your in-laws at home you can’t bring that unhappiness into the office.

Josh: That is my life exactly. At home I am often thinking about problems at work and all of the things that I need to do and at work I am always thinking about home life.

Joey: If you don’t separate the two your home life will effect your work performance and you pressure from work will affect your quality time with your wife and children. In turn you will not enjoy either one and both will suffer.

  Stop Slouching

Shoulders back, chest out. Your mom has told you a million times and, believe it or not, she’s not just saying it to nag—she actually has good reasons. Slouching not only makes you look less attractive, it can also affect your health. And, look around your office, most cube workers are guiltily of bad posture(n.

“People who sit at a desk for a long period of time tend to(v.倾向于)their shoulders in and hang their head forward,” says Dr. Jason Queiros, a Chiropractor at Stamford Sports and Spine in Connecticut. “Every inch you hold your head forward, you add 10 pounds of pressure on your spine(n. Let’s say you’re leaning into your monitor by just two inches, that’s 20 extra pounds that your back and spinal column(n.圆柱) have to endure.” How much damage can those 20 pounds cause? Lots!

(Stamford Sports and Spine in Connecticut)的脊椎推拿治疗师詹森?

  1. Headaches
Constantly holding that extra 20-pound weight forces your neck and back muscles to work overtime. “They become overused and tired,” says Queiros. Then, when you finally relax them (say, at home after work), the muscles tense(v.紧张) up and could spasm, causing nasty tension headaches.

  2. Jaw pains
A misaligned spine puts extra stress on your jaw joints. The lower jaw shifts forward and the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly. This can cause lower jaw pains as well as muscle pains in the back of the head.

  3. Balance
Picture your comfiest position when you’re driving a car or sitting in your desk chair: Chances are, you favor one side of your body and lean toward it. “The muscles on that side are taking the brunt of your weight and stress,” warns Queiros. With poor posture, one side of your body is tight and spastic and the other side is loose. “That will throw off your body’s biomechanics(n.

  4. Spine alignment issues
If your spine isn’t aligning(v.矫正) properly, it can affect your rib cage, which can damage your heart and lungs, and ultimately lead to gastrointestinal(n. It’s easy to slouch if you’re not constantly thinking about your posture (in fact, you’re probably even doing it while you read this article), but there’s good news: Your slouch is reversible(adj. “As long as you catch it before you’re a 60-year-old decrepit(adj.衰老的) man,” jokes Queiros. Of course you’ll need to arrange your desk properly (get a headset for your phone, center your monitor, lower your armrests, etc.), but there are also some easy exercises you can do to help correct your slouch and get your mind thinking about posture.

  5. Scapula(n.肩胛骨) retraction (n.收回)
Scapula retraction is a fancy way of saying to squeeze your shoulder blades together. “People kill their chest at the gym but you’ve got to work out your back as well,” Queiros points out. Grab resistance bands in front of you and pull the bands to your chest. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and concentrate on stretching your upper back. Come back to your natural position and repeat in three sets of 20.

  6. Chin pulls
Sitting at your desk, suck in your chin. (“It’ll feel like you’re giving yourself a double chin,” says Queiros.) Feel the stretch in the back of your skull and then relax. Do a set of 10 to 20 at least three or five times throughout the day.

  7. Small neck stretches
To loosen up the muscles at the base of your neck while sitting at your desk, bring one ear to your shoulder and let the weight of your head hang. With your opposite arm, grab the bottom of your chair and pull up while your head still hangs—you’ll feel the stretch in the exposed side of your neck—hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side and do the entire stretch three or four times a day.

  8. Extended arm stretch
Put your arms behind your back and lock your hands together. Bring your arms out and let your head hang down. Hold for 30 seconds and feel your neck and shoulder stretch. Repeat three or four times a day.
And a few things to remember at work: Take a 20-minute break every four hours and take five-minute micro-breaks every 30 minutes. Get up and walk around and refresh your position. “You don’t want to be in the same position for more than 30 minutes,” says Queiros.

Clear dirt off PCs and peripherals(n.
Your computer, printer, fax machine, and other home office gear will work better if you keep them clean and dust-free. Before you start cleaning, make sure that all your equipment is shut off. Now mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bucket. Dampen a clean cloth in the solution(n.溶液,两种或两种物质混合的物质) -- never use a spray bottle(喷壶); you don't want to get liquid on the circuits inside -- then squeeze it out as hard as you can, and start wiping. Keep a few cotton swabs(n.棉签) on hand for getting to the buildups in tight spaces (like around the keys of your PC keyboard).

  Clean your window blinds
Just put on a white cotton glove -- the kind sold for gardening is perfect -- and moisten(v.使潮湿) the fingers in a solution made of equal parts white vinegar and hot tap water. Now simply slide(v.滑动)your fingers across both sides of each slat and prepare to be amazed. Use a container of clean water to periodically (adv.定期地) wash off the glove.

  Unclog(疏通) and deodorize(v.除臭) drains(n.
The combination of vinegar and baking soda is one of the most effective ways to unclog and deodorize drains.

When you want to remove mildew stains, reach for white vinegar first. It can be safely used without additional ventilation(n.通风) and can be applied to almost any surface --bathroom fixtures and tile(n.瓷砖), clothing, furniture, painted surfaces, plastic curtains, and more. To eliminate(v.去除) heavy mildew accumulations, use it full strength.

Has the budding(adj.成长中的,发育中的) young artist in your home just decorated a painted wall in your home with a ballpoint src? Don't lose your cool(发火). Rather, dab(v.轻拍,轻擦) some full-strength white vinegar on the "masterpiece" using a cloth or a sponge(n. Repeat until the marks are gone.

  Clean your piano keys

Dip(v.浸) a soft cloth into a solution of 1/2 cup white vinegar mixed in 2 cups water, squeeze it out until there are no drips, then gently wipe off each key. Use a second cloth to dry off the keys as you move along, then leave the keyboard uncovered for 24 hours.

Life’s Enough: Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

“Enjoy your own life without comparing it with that of another.” - Marquis de Condorcet

If you took the strengths of others, and compared them to your weaknesses, how do you think you’d size up(判断,评估)? And do you think this would make you feel good?

The funny thing is, this is what most of us do at one time or another — and some of us do pretty often.

And that’s so important — being able to look at your own strengths, and see your true value. It’s actually one of the keys to success, because without this ability, you will be unmotivated(adj.无动力的), and won’t believe in yourself.

My quick advice: try to be aware of(意识到)when you start comparing yourself to others … once you’ve developed this awareness, try this trick (n.技巧): stop yourself. Tell yourself, “Stop that!” And then start thinking about all the things you DO have, the things you love, the people you have, the blessings (n.幸运的事) that life has given you. Make this a regular practice, and you’ll start to be happier with your life.

A: Hello, thank you for calling. This is Tracy speaking. How may I help you?

B: Hello. I would like to speak to your director of human resources, Ms.Weasley, Please.

Hello, thank you for calling.

  2. 然后,对来电者介绍自己身份:应该用句型“This is •••speaking”而不要用“I'm•••.”

  4. 在电话中告知对方,“我想找•••”,应该用句型“I would like to speak to···,不要说成“I want to talk with··”这样显得不职业,同时也缺乏礼貌。

Rupert Murdoch, unfazedby a foam pie attack in the British parliament, made a "humble" apology on Tuesday for crimes that have rocked his media empire and the government but refused to resign, saying the fault lay with staff who "betrayed" him.

Revelations of phone-hackingand payments to police by the News of the World have raised questions on his family's grip on News Corporation, on the probityof the police and on the judgment of Prime Minister David Cameron, who returned early from Africa for an emergency parliament debate on Wednesday.

Calling it "the most humble day of my life", Murdoch defended his record and that of his son, and said he could not know everything that his 53,000 employees did. James, 38, sat beside him before parliament's media committee, interjectingon occasion as his 80-year-old father hesitated to give answers on what he knew, and when, of criminality at the Sunday tabloid.

But as three hours of earnest, at times testy, proceedings drew to a close with lawmakers pressing the Murdochs to explain payments to some of those involved in the decade-old affair, the hearing briefly turned to violence and farcewhen a man rose from the public seating of the packed committee room.

As he tried to hit the elder Murdoch with a paper plate of white foam, the Australian-born mogul's 42-year-old wife Wendi Deng leapt in to slap the protester in a meleebefore he was seized by police. He was identified as a left-wing comedian.

After a short recess, Murdoch, now jacket-less, was told by one of the committee members he had shown "immense guts". Another lawmaker, long one of his most bitter critics, later jokingly complimented his wife on her "very good left hook".

That televised cameo, and the emotionally worded statements from the Murdochs on their personal remorseand will to clean up the mess at the News International newspaper unit, may temper some of the public and parliamentary fury aimed at a man who has been courted and feared by British leaders for decades.

"You couldn't make this stuff up. It could have turned the whole situation around for them," said Andrew Hawkins, chairman of polling company ComRes.

"The combination of his father's age and the custard pie attack will have elicited a tremendous amount of sympathy. I suspect that in the weeks to come we will probably look back at this moment and think it was pivotalfor them."

  1832年,英国人Richard Turner(理查•特纳)参加了在Preston(普雷斯顿)举行的禁酒集会。

---I've got a case of wine and two boxes of beer. I've also got some soft drinks for Granny. She's teetotal nowadays.

---My father used to drink heavily, you know. Every night he'd have a bottle of Scotch. Maybe that's why I've always been a teetotaler.

---Well, truth be told William, I'm not a teetotaler. I like a drink every now and then but I just can't drink pint after pint of beer like you English people!

  2. Wish all the best wishes for you.

  3. Take good care of yourself.

  Life and Transportation

When I flew to Dalian from Beijing, I decided to take a plane(乘飞机), because I had heard all the nightmares(n.噩梦) about trains in China with their huge number of people crammed(v.填满) onboard. Living in Wudaokou in Beijing, there are more people than any similar area in Toronto. If I’m heading to work, I prefer to just walk 20 to 15minutes to get there; it’s so much easier avoiding the traffic jams(交通堵塞). But if I need to go to another job which is far away in uptown(离开市中心;在(或向)市郊) Beijing, I’ll take the subway instead.

When I first got on the subway, I was shocked. I had never been on a subway train so crowded in my life. It was very uncomfortable to be so close to other people with no personal space. It takes a little bit time getting used to it. Once I had this man reading an English book beside me in a position that was clearly designed for me to see that he is reading an English book. I think ‘okay why not’, and say, ‘Studying English?’ This guy had been too embarrassed to start the conversation and wanted me to initiate(v.开始) it first, so he tried to catch my attention. It is really kind of amusing.

I don’t usually take a bus unless they don’t have a subway station in walking distance. I always meet people on the bus, and they ask ‘Can you speak Chinese?’I make a lot of new friends on the bus, my cell phone is full of strangers’numbers. There are no signs in English at the bus station, so I need to know where I am going, which means I also need to know the right Chinese characters. I ask the bus attendants for help sometimes. Even if you can’t speak or read Chinese you have to try. If you don’t try, you can easily end up at the wrong stop. I’ve had some memorable touching moments too. One time I was on a bus and I only had a 10 yuan note on me. A man just reached over and paid the 1.5yuan saying it didn’t matter. At that moment I was so touched.

    前台小姐:“you have what thing?”
    老外:“can you speak english?”
前台小姐:“if i not speak english, i am speaking what?”
    老外:“can anybody else speak english?”
前台小姐:“you yourself look. all people are playing, no people have time, you can wait, you wait, you not wait, you go!”
老外:“good heavens. anybody here can speak english?”
前台小姐:“shout what shout, quiet a little, you on earth have what thing?”
老外:“i want to speak to your head.”
前台小姐:“head not zai. you tomorrow come!”

A businessman enters a tavern, sits down at the bar, and orders a double martini on the rocks. After he finishes the drink, he peeks inside his shirt pocket, and then orders the bartender to prepare another double martini.

After he finishes that, he again peeks inside his shirt pocket and orders the bartender to bring another double martini.

The bartender says, "Look, buddy, I'll bring ya' martinis all night long - but you gotta tell me why you look inside your shirt pocket before you order a refill."

The customer replies, "I'm peeking at a photo of my wife. When she starts to look good, I know it's time to go home."

Each and every one of us is responsible for the greenhouse gases we emit in our daily actions and choices. Therefore, combating climate change is going to take the combined efforts of everyone on the planet.

The average household carbon footprint in China is 2.41 tons of carbon dioxide annually. That's enough to fill half an Olympic swimming pool.

Surprised? Well, here's how you can work to reduce it:

   1. Take showers rather than baths and reduce your shower time by two minutes. This will save water and give you an extra two minutes in bed.

   2. Don't purchase unnecessary clothes, and be careful about the materials you buy. Wool and cotton fabrics have a really high greenhouse gas impact. Manmade fibers such as polyester are a better choice.

   3. There's no point having the heat up high while the wind's blowing in under the door or sneaking in through the window. Reseal all window frames to keep the heat in.

   4. Try to buy high-quality, long-lasting products even though they may cost a little more. A laptop is more efficient than a desktop, and a small screen TV is better than a big flat-screen.

   5. Only turn the water heater on when necessary, and adjust temperature controls to avoid overheating. Put a lid on a pan when boiling water.

   6. When using the washing machine, be sure there's a full load and turn the temperature down if it's not really grubby.

   7. The greediest home device along with the washing machine is the fridge. Make sure it's as efficient as possible by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from the oven or heater. Don't put food in when it's still warm.

   8. This is obvious, but essential: switch off all appliances when you're not using them. This includes lights.

   9. Conserve energy by using efficient light bulbs. They use about one-third of the energy of normal bulbs and last 10 times as long.

   10. Only print things out when necessary, and print double-sided and reduce the margins.

   11. Take your own mug and cutlery to work. This saves throwing away disposable cups and containers--but that could be outweighed by washing your cutlery. So, pay attention to how you use water when washing your dishes.

   12. Find out what the recycling options are in your area. Then make sure you keep items such as paper and plastic bottles separate so that they can be recycled. There are places where you can recycle electronic appliances and batteries. Make sure you find them.

   13. Look for reusable, recyclable, biodegradable items and remember to carry your reusable shopping bags!

   14. Each week, choose one day when you don't eat meat. Meat uses up lots of energy because it takes a long time to produce.

   15. Only buy the amount of food you need and if there are leftovers, get creative. For instance, make them into a soup. Ask to take food home from restaurants if there's some left, but remember to take your own container to avoid using a disposable carton.

   16. Food production eats up lots of energy. When you buy food, go local rather than imported, and get fresh vegetables instead of frozen.

1."Are we poisonous?" the young snake asked his mother. "Yes, dear," she replied ,"Why do you ask?" “because I bite my tongue”。

  2. In a restaurant, a man called the waiter, “Waiter, this lobster has only one claw.” “I'm sorry, sir. It must have been in a fight.” “Well, bring me the winner then”

THREE hundred years ago news travelled by word of mouth or letter, and circulated in taverns and coffee houses in the form of pamphlets, newsletters and broadsides. “The Coffee houses particularly are very commodious(adj.宽敞的) for a free Conversation, and for reading at an easie Rate all manner of printed News,” noted one observer. Everything changed in 1833 when the first mass-audience newspaper, the New York Sun, pioneered the use of advertising to reduce the cost of news, thus giving advertisers access to a wider audience. At the time of the launch America’s bestselling paper sold just 4,500 copies a day; the Sun, with its steam press, soon reached 15,000. The penny press, followed by radio and television, turned news from a two-way conversation into a one-way broadcast, with a relatively small number of firms controlling the media.

Now, as our special report explains, the news industry is returning to something closer to the coffee house. The internet is making news more participatory, social, diverse and partisan(adj.党派性), reviving the discursive ethos of the era before mass media. That will have profound(adj.深远的,深刻的) effects on society and politics.

  Going West

Over the past decade, throughout the Western world, people have been giving up newspapers and TV news and keeping up with events in profoundly different ways. Most strikingly, ordinary people are increasingly involved in compiling(n. 过滤,清除), discussing and distributing(n.分布) news. Twitter lets people anywhere report what they are seeing. Classified documents are published in their thousands online. Mobile-phone footage of Arab uprisings and American tornadoes(n.龙卷风) is posted on social-networking sites and shown on television newscasts. An amateur(adj.业余的)video taken during the Japanese earthquake has been watched 15m times on YouTube. Social-networking sites help people find, discuss and share news with their friends.

And it is not just readers who are challenging the media elite(n. Technology firms including Google, Facebook and Twitter have become important (some say too important) conduits of news. Celebrities and world leaders, including Barack Obama and Hugo Chávez, publish updates directly via social networks; many countries now make raw data available through “open government” initiatives(n. The internet let people read newspapers or watch television channels from around the world: the Guardian, a British newspaper, now has more online readers abroad than at home. The web has allowed new providers of news, from individual bloggers to sites such as the Huffington Post, to rise to prominence(n.声望) in a very short space of time. And it has made possible entirely new approaches to journalism, such as that practised by WikiLeaks, which provides an anonymous way for whistleblowers to publish documents. The news agenda is no longer controlled by a few press barons and state outlets, like the BBC.

  We contort(v.

In principle, every liberal(n.自由主义者 should celebrate this. A more participatory and social news environment, with a remarkable diversity and range of news sources, is a good thing. A Texan who once had to rely on the Houston Chronicle to interpret the world can now collect information from myriad different sources. Authoritarian rulers everywhere have more to fear.

The transformation of the news business is unstoppable, and attempts to reverse it are doomed to(注定) failure. But there are steps individuals can take to mitigate these worries. As producers of new journalism, they can be scrupulous(adj.严格的,一丝不苟的)with facts and transparent with their sources. As consumers, they can be catholic(adj.广泛) in their tastes and demanding in their standards. And although this transformation does raise concerns, there is much to celebrate in the noisy, diverse, vociferous, argumentative and stridently(adv.尖锐地) alive environment of the news business in the age of the internet. The coffee house is back. Enjoy it.
