Jun：Hey, everyone. Have you watched a Chinese film called Return to Dust, which was heavily censored? Few expected the film to become a hit in China.

Ambreal：I did. I went to cinema with friends last week to watch it. It's magnificent, heart-breaking, jubliant, hopeful, hopeless, tender, cruel, all of these and beyond.
安必欧：我看过。上周我和朋友去电影院看的。它是一部宏伟的，令人心碎的，欢乐的，充满希望的，绝望的，温柔的，残酷的等的电影。
Host：Wow, such a wonderful film ever. But it has been cancelled or banned. Are there any reasons?

Jun：Well, it's hard to say. First, let me summarize the love story for all of you. The story is straightforward: Two lonely middle-aged people, each barely tolerated by their more worldly family members, are pushed into an arranged marriage, which quietly blossoms into a companionable love match. So, the film has pushed realism to new extremes. It's too real, shocking real. So, it must have made many audience breathless. Well, I used to a documentary director in Western European countries. For making money, the government paid us to make documentary films about China, especially ones about the dark side of people and society. ....

The director Li Ruijun has taken his commitment to authenticity to a whole new level. Before shooting began in 2020, Li issued a startling demand to his cast and crew: they would all need to spend the better part of a year living — and working — in a remote town in the northwestern province of Gansu.

Li, who grew up in rural Gansu, says he was determined to make every scene in “Return to Dust” 100% real. Any inaccuracies, he believed, would represent a betrayal of the community that had raised him in the 1980s.

“The film is a love story,” says Li. “But it’s a film about love in many layers. There’s romantic love, but also love of the land, love for other people, love for the world and the environment, love for animals, and love for family. This is a film about the greater things in life.”
